In my leg of Sumba island, I take a "travel car" (shared taxi) from West Sumba to East Sumba to reach Waingapu, a moderately modern town compared to rest of Sumba. Through a couch-surfing host, I rent a scooter to reach the beautiful Air Terjun Tengaddu waterfalls riding through the surreal highlands of East Sumba. A thoroughly enjoyable ride is only ruined by a small fall, thank goodness it was at a very low speed.
Now exiting from Sumba island without flight wasn't easy. There are only two ferries every week from Waingapu to Aimere, a small port on the East side of Flores. Fortunately, when I arrived there was a special ferry, that probably runs 1-2 times a year, to Labuan Bajo - the second most famous tourist place in Indonesia after Bali - hub to the Komodo island tourism ecosystem. So I decide to hop on this very long ferry for which I had to wait 5 hours for a 12 hour journey. Nonetheless, I reach Flores in one piece, only to be greeted by the urban capitalism of food courts and Starbucks, which was a guilty pleasure after spending one week in Sumba island, one of the poorest and remotest, yet most beautiful places of Indonesia.
How did you like the Sumba videos? Would you go to Sumba island?
