After experiencing its worst earthquake in 25 years, I headed over to Hualien, Taiwan, to see the Dragon Boat Festival and what there was to do without as many tourists.

About this Hualien travel vlog:
I tried several excursions for this Taiwan travel vlog that didn’t work out well. I went whale watching but didn’t see any whales. I went to an aboriginal hunting and cooking from the Amis tribe, but because of the earthquake, almost no one else showed up. I also went to a family farm where I dressed up in Japanese-style clothing and fed carrots to animals.
Luckily, it was also the Dragon Boat Festival. I went to the beautiful Liyu lake outside of the city to check out the festivities. I ate Zongzi and another delicious, unique Taiwanese snack. It was my first time actually watching the dragon boat races, so I’m glad I finally got to see it!
About the Dragon Boat Festival in Taiwan:
The Dragon Boat Festival is a significant cultural event in Taiwan, celebrated on the fifth lunar month's fifth day. This vibrant festival commemorates the ancient Chinese poet Qu Yuan. Festivities include the thrilling dragon boat races, where teams paddle in sync to the beat of drums, compete for victory, and symbolize teamwork and tradition. The beautifully decorated boats with dragon heads and tails glide through rivers, attracting spectators from all over.
Another key aspect of the festival is the consumption of zongzi, glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves filled with various ingredients like pork, beans, or sweet red beans. Families gather to prepare and enjoy these traditional treats. The festival also involves rituals such as hanging mugwort and calamus to ward off evil spirits and wearing sachets filled with herbs for protection. The Dragon Boat Festival in Taiwan is a lively blend of athleticism, culinary delights, and cultural heritage.
