The Kit Kat ad featured a lot of different people and characters in situations contrary to their personalities.

Like Lemmy from Motorhead playing the violin (ironically, the Motorhead song '1916' was mostly strings and vocals) instead of loud, dirty Bass - or Roy Keane doing something peaceful instead of ranting

I wonder how this works in regards to the BBC being a part of the British government. I mean the BBC's radio would not even play songs that mentioned consumer brands like the Kinks' "Lola" (that mentioned Coca-Cola). Maybe that's the real reason that the Dalek commercials stopped after 2005, with the possibility being that the issues with the BBC reclaiming the rights/claiming the rights from the Terry Nation estate being resolved created the new issue that the BBC couldn't license the characters to consumer brands to avoid the appearance of favoritism.

It seems like the rules on commercials are really mouldable for the BBC, I am yet to find any challenging against any of the ads, so perhaps the policy became stricter in the 90s or something? Really interesting thing to bring up actually, thanks for pointing it out!

You've answered your own question. The BBC never owned the rights to the Daleks. So they had no control over their metchandising or advertising appearances. Even though it was Ray Cusick of the BBC who actually created the image, Terry Nation held the rights, which passed to his edtate. When the shiw was being revived in 2005, it nearly went ahead without Daleks as Nation's estate were demanding a ludicrous amount for their use. It's also because of Terry Nation that so few Patrick Troughton episodes have been retrieved. After Power of the Daleks, he withdrew permission for the BBC to use them as he wanted to pitch a Dalek series to the US networks. This meant that foreign countries were reluctant to buy Troughton stories as there was no introductory story for his version of the Doctor. Therefore when the BBC set out to restore the discarded serials, there were far fewer Troughton ones lurking in the vaults of foreign TV stations than there were Hartnell ones.

One Weetabix box had the solution to decode secret messages from the Time Lords (I don't remember if the messages were to the Doctor or to the child who was decifering them). but I had hours of fun with them at a simpler time. I don't know if the messages were supposed to be in Gallifreyan or just a code invented for the ad campaign.

Interesting video. The Weetabix thing actually first happened in 1974 or 1975 (they issued six sets of three figures, with a different Dalek in each, along with the Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, and assorted other villains, and a playset on the box that you would cut out when you'd eaten all the Weetabix in it. I think the 1977 one was slightly updated, and was backed with the TV ad (I don't recall the earlier one having an ad, but that doesn't mean there wasn't one). Also, I was unaware of the Sky Ray lolly (even I was too young once...) but during the Pertwee era, there was a lolly called the Dalek Death Ray, which was chocolate and mint flavour, and contained a picture card in the wrapper. I don't know if there was an ad for that, either. I remember the Hamlet ad, and thought it was hilarious at the time. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

It’s possible I mixed up the filming with the broadcasting as I regrettably have with a few other ads in this video. I really appreciate the insight and I found some other people online mentioning the Sky Ray Rocket Lolly during the 70s, apparently, the ad did not perform well and so Walls scrapped the ad but kept the deal with doctor who. Thanks for watching!

@@MammothChats I think it's brilliant that you did the video at all, so thanks for that. I wonder if the Dalek Death Ray was a more concerted second attempt (or did the Sky Ray Rocket lolly regenerate...?). I was born in 1967, so I don't remember anything from the Troughton era, and I'm sure I've seen the Sky Ray lolly in some form as a generic rocket-shaped, fruit-flavoured lolly, so if it's the same lolly, it lost any connection with Doctor Who at least by the time Dalek Death Ray appeared. For your enjoyment... pbs.twimg.com/media/EbjBHNPXYAAczTO.png (this is a picture of the Dalek Death Ray... I tried to copy & paste the image directly, but it wasn't having any of it).

The Lost in Space Robot isn't Robby. Robby the Robot comes from the movie Forbidden Planet, made in the late 50s. The Lost in Space robot is called B9, or more often, as simply 'Robot'. Robby and B9 were both designed by Robert Kinoshita, and share very similar upper torso. But they're not the same machine. The Daleks Halet commercial is from much later. I'd say mid to late 80s - it's too good technically for something from 1973.

Yeah I found some really differing reports from the Hamlet Cigar ad. The Wikipedia page featuring Dalek ad dates did say 80s, but the earliest post of the video said 70s. Really confusing. As for the error with the sci fi robots I apologise and appreciate the corrections 😅

Sky Ray ad (And Power of the Daleks) was 1966 not 1968.... The premise of the Kit Kat ad was showing people and things acting the opposite to what was expected of them due to having a 'break' from the norm. Nice try but you really need to do some research before making videos on a subject ...far too many errors in this one !

Hello Mark Wardel you seem to be quite mistaken on the date of the Sky Ray ad. It was filmed during march 1967 after the filming of Power Of The Daleks, I estimated 1968 since I did not have a solid record on the ad broadcasting dates. Apologies for me not understanding the Kit Kat advertisement ! Nice try but you really need to do some research on this one!
