I liked the way you handled the boat, boarding, beaching, rowing. To me that adds credibility to your pitch.

Thanks for practical user info and perspective. Also, green & black is a much more appealing color scheme. 👍

A few hints for set up Luke does this stuff easily since he has set it up many times. Here is what I have learned over 20 years. When first opening the bote, kneel with 1 knee on the lower edge of the bote, push upper side away. Use spreader bar to open rest of way. Start spreader bar near the stern so the stern flexes open the maximum distance. This makes hole alignment in transom easier. The hole alignment is the most trying part. Be sure the spreader bar square cut out is positioned so it can catch the near (bottom) edge when the bote is half open; this gives you a chance to rest. I lost some of the hardware; I replaced with clevis pins or long nuts and bolts. Try to get bolts with a round loop as the head, much easier to tighten by hand. Seats go in easier if the middle bracket is canted off to the side; use the spreader bar to push it in place after slotted side holes are bolted. Install the cart wheels near the rear at first as the sides are near vertical; then slide them forward as needed for balance. The further forward you move the wheels, the lighter the front end is to pick up

I owned an older style PBote for 15 years before I sold it to a guy while I was out on the lake. Awesome boat. Tho it was "flexible" on the water, that made it really stable, and a nice ride in choppy water. I often stood up in it while flyfishing/trolling. I caught fish better in the PBote! My alumi boat is really rocky/unstable while standing. Scary. Also, with 5hp motor, Portabote was 10X quieter than my alumi boat. I'd transport it hanging on the side of my trailer via a rack. My mistake was selling it; I'd sell my alumi and go back to a 10' Porta... if I could sell my Alumi.

Whats the purpose of the bow cap? I was given a porta bote as a gift and it had no now cap. Took it out on the water and the water got nowhere near that level with about 280 pounds of human in it and a bit of gear.

From my personal experience here are some more tips, though I have an older Bote: -The oars are alright but upgrading them and getting traditional oarlocks is recommended if you're doing any serious rowing -The bow cap is not really necessary and is just a thin piece of plastic bungeed to the grommet holes. It's mostly just cosmetic and makes it harder to pull the boat with a rope. -The hull material gouges pretty easily, especially when setting up. Doesn't seem to damage the hull too much but we'll see. There is a note on the website about this and stating not to drag this over sand or gravel constantly -Over time the transom folds will start to wear and can crack all the way down. Seems to be only after 10+ years of use. Roofing tape like Gorilla Tape or Eternabond can fix this for the most part. -The older boats (Genesis series) have non-UV resistant foam which will start flaking like dandruff after a few years in the sun. Spraying it with Armorall every once in a while seems to help slow it down some. You should also be using this on the hull too.

Not everybody can, I just found a used portabote to use while I'm in school, nowhere to store a canoe or even a kayak in a Boston apartment (unless I wanna spend hundreds on storage or travel to storage Everytime I want to fish) Good option for some of us.

Where do you attach a painter?
@s2vanegmond
6 жыл бұрын
John Almberg I have this exact boat and that exact problem dogs me. The bow cap clips onto two grommets in the hull and a painter goes trough there. I really like the porta boat as a dinghy and runabout. It is never happy being towed in a rough sea but fortunately it is easy to fold up on deck. In 2m Lake Huron waves it turtled and went full submarine. Came back up when we stopped.
