Great advice. Be a realistic filmmaker. Learn something new everyday. Learn from theory. Learn from practice. Learn from people who inspire you. Never give up. Stay curious. Keep positive. Always creative.

He makes some great points and I agree, film schools should teach students how to make a living at their craft. They should also offer more courses on film business.

James' comments are spot on! I could have had more success in visual media far earlier had I taken some business and marketing classes.

Marshall Ross Thompson Thanks for your comment Marshall. What kind of business or marketing lessons do you wish you knew earlier?

Film Courage Well, for one thing, learn about the various film opportunities in business as well as pure art. Remember that nearly all the renaissance artists had "patrons" that commissioned art for their own satisfaction or glorification. These days, that does not exist so much. I do not consider myself an "artist" although there is some art and beauty in what I do. I offer my creative services to business, education, energy, public safety, government, nonprofits, healthcare clients where "I tell your story." I don't necessarily have a compelling story of my own I'm dying to get on film, you see. So, parallel with mastering the technique and art of film or video making, I would study markets where their story needs to be told and how to reach that market. Marketing yourself, as it were. Use LinkedIn, join associations, look and act like a professional, join Toastmasters and learn how to speak in public. People will generally hire you not based on art, but how reliable and professional you are. Even in Hollywood - actually, especially in Hollywood - it is primarily a business, not an artist's colony

Honestly I feel like film school did teach me a lot of that, as an undergrad.

LOLZ what great advice I guess you just have to turn the sound on in order to make great movies. Sounds like great advice from a very experienced filmmaker.

Film Courage It doesn't help me to be exactly, I'm just thankful for someone who says what I experience since years. I am in a kinda similar situation, it's just nice to hear that from someone else. That's it :-)
