I love how our politicians here in Ireland are stating that the demands for an increase in pilot salary is "exorbitant" after our politicians, during the Covid Lock-down voted themselves SIX 20% salary increases while demanding people take salary deductions across the board. Just this year, our politicians have voted themselves the first three of six salary/expenses/pension increases this year, while telling the working people that they will now have to work until they are 75-80 years of age, due to lack of funds to support state/private pensions. Pilots and other flight crew here in Ireland get less salary than any other country, the same with our doctors/nurses and other tradecraft people, yet our politicians just keep ignoring the very people who vote for them when those people start asking for a salary that allows them to actually maintain a decent standard of living, in relation to their training/experience and occupation. Our politicians are only looking at this issue now, as it may affect the vote in the coming general election if they don't take the right action to resolve this issue. Unsurprising enough, the Green Party are against the pilots getting the salary increases, as they want the airlines limited to only a few flights per year, to cut down the "carbon footprint" caused by air travel. The leader of our Green party resigned yesterday, after losing the local election votes, and this man has, for the last four years, hardly spent a whole week in the very country he was supposed to represent, as he was always taking private flights to other countries to lecture their people/politicians about climate change. His deputy party leader is currently holidaying in Florida, after using their party's private jet to fly her and her family there, as she doesn't like to use commercial airlines, due to her worries over adding to the carbon footprint airlines leave while flying. So she used a private jet instead, and not a small jet, but a full size airliner, fitted to only carry twelve people, not the usual 150 passengers. So it's yet another example of just how disconnected our politicians are from reality again, denying pilots their due, while taking private flights flown by the very same pilots they don't think deserve a salary increase.

Their increase alone is more than most people earn in a year. Pure greed I hope they get nothing now . Just feel sorry for hard working people to have their holidays ruined

The State needs to start investing in the expansion of Belfast airport. Send about 35% of the Aer Lingus fleet to Belfast and send the pilots with them. Is the 24% increase staged over a number of years?

They are very well paid already. Earning more than Ryanair pilots. The other staff in aer Lingus got a pay deal in line with what is being offered. If they get this exorbitant raise they will cause unrest amongst other staff who have already accepted. The damage they are doing to people who had been looking forward to a well deserved holiday, and the image for tourists who were travelling here, is enormous.

We should look at the salaries the board get. These GREEDY companies think little of their workers or passengers. Companies that give no pay rises for a few years then complain when people ask for more.

Mr Moriartys salary stats are a lie by omission to erode public support for strike action. His stats would have you believe that no pilot in Aer Lingus is earning less than 200k a year. He is using the term pilot to refer only to captains, leaving out First/Second officers (co pilots) entirely. The starting wage for a second officer is 60k. Many of whom are coming from other airlines with large training debts (130k plus). It takes many years of training and experience to reach the rank of captain in Aer lingus. In short, don’t believe all the numbers quoted by executives in publications or online, be in no doubt they are well informed by Union busting solicitation firms and advisers on how exactly to steer a conversation. A win for the pilots Union here could set a precedent to other industries to work toward a living wage pay increase that they have earned.

Do you have any idea of the costs involved with obtaining a commercial pilot's licence? Airline pilots just starting out as qualified first officers will have loans in excess of €189,000! Try repaying that as well as a mortgage or rent. Rent is most likely as the airlines can change the pilot's "Home Base" whenever they like.
