Mice began attacking vulnerable adult albatross on Midway Atoll in 2015 while the birds sat defenselessly on their eggs. This predatory behavior caused injuries, nest abandonment, and death. The SPP used brodifacoum rodenticide pellets engineered to maximize bait consumption by the mice while minimizing negative effects to the rest of the Midway's environment. Summer was selected as the season with the fewest shorebirds and no airborne adult albatross around low-flying helicopter operations.
All footage was taken by Jon Brack with Friends of Midway Atoll and Austin Hall with Island Conservation in July of 2023.
