Lomonosov Moscow State University is one of the oldest and largest classical universities in Russia, being another center of Russian science and culture.
The design of the building of the university was presented by I.I. Shuvalov and M.V. Lomonosov. Originally, the opening of the university was planned for 1754, but because of preparation works it happened only in 1755.
The decree on foundation of the university was signed by the empress Elizaveta Petrovna on the 24th of January (4th of February), 1755. In memory of the day when the decree was signed the university annually celebrates Tatiana day (12th of January by the Julian calendar, and on 25th of January by the Gregorian calendar).
Before, the university occupied the building of the Main Pharmacy at place of the State History Museum. During the reign of Ekaterina the Second, the university moved to a building on the opposite side of Mokhovaya Street, which was built in the period between years 1782 and 1793 under the project of Matvey Kazakov.
Later, after the 1812 Fire of Moscow, the building was reconstructed by architect Domenico Gilardi.
In 1949 the construction of a new building, which then became the main building of MSU, began on the Vorobyovy Gory.
