I'm sure you will be pleased with the results, if you alternate the layers of carbon and nitrogen materials the bin really puts out good compost.

Appreciate that. I built a framed screen to fit over the wheelbarrow and sift out small twigs and hard pits and mixed in some bone/blood meal for a nice plant boost in August. The racoons sit on the top lid and try to chew through on the handle but have not breached inside yet.

Starting from scratch until it was full to the top, including the winter freeze, yes it took from Mother's day in May until a year later. This is the large Aerobin, just us two of us and a 80x120 ft lot. Winter 2019 has been very cold, so the top part has frozen and we can't add anymore until warmer weather. This bin works great for us.

When we filled ours up for the first time it was late spring and 4months later we had good compost ready to use

Wow, given the stuff in the bottom was a year old it didnt look very composted or broken down at all.

Given the variety of kitchen/garden organics used the end compost is quite easy to sift through. Utilizing a homemade framed wire screen over a wheelbarrow this compost spreads easily. Moisture content hardly registers as slightly damp, set out overnight it is completely dry. Thanks for looking, best of luck with your garden.

@@ultrablue I think we are going to go with a worm based system instead. Relying on bacteria and temperature to do the composting seems to take to much effort, even if we get a aerated tumbler it still needs to be turned multiple times per day to optimize results. I dont have time for that.
@ultrablue

@@Broughden Worms do find a way into our compost bin. We make sure to balance the organics with carbon such as wood chips, straw and some Bokashi compost from the kitchen. With just the two of us now at home, the Aerobin has worked very well for our compost needs over the years now. I just add the layers and poke the sides down with a wooden handle as needed, no need to turn the pile with the oxygen stack up the middle. I would purchase this product again. All the best to you and your family.

Have you ever measured how warm the pile is with a compost thermometer? I am thinking about something like this and have chicken waste that would need to reach a hot temp to kill off harmful bacteria.
@ultrablue

I have not used a probe to check internal temperature. Our composter freezes on top during the winter months in Ontario. I can open up the front hatch and probe the pile near the top of the door and get a temperature reading now, while the pile is still active. The plant and manure substrates should reach 60°C-72°C degrees (140°F-160°F) as they decompose. The temperature should be maintained for three days in a row. Not sure if this can be achieved in the fall but I will check.
@ultrablue

Ok, I did a temperature check with a ThermoWorks probe. From the front, only going in less than a foot, it measured 58 Fahrenheit or 14.4 Celsius. Evenings are cool here in Southern Ontario, so unless you live in a hot climate, or have a huge compost pile, I wouldn't want to put chicken manure with wood shavings into the Aerobin.

Did you add any worms to your bin? From what I understand, this bin can support up to 1000 worms and it makes the composting go faster.
@ultrablue
4 жыл бұрын
I have not specifically added worms directly to the pile. Every few layers of matter, we will add a couple shovelfuls of good soil and it appears worms find their way into the pile. Also, we have a small electric brush shredder and add wood shavings from our fruit and hardwood pruning. Building a screening frame to fit over a wheelbarrow really helps to clean up the compost. This compost bin produces excellent material.

Gets too hot for compost worms, but soilderfly larve chew through things fast. Leave the base liquid valve open and stick pizza box like cardboard in there and they should find there way for you by themselves, but you can also buy the larve as they are also used as bird food. I prefer them making compost?

The Aerobin system is aerobic hot composting, with the oxygen tube running up the middle. Anaerobic would be a pit or trench with your material buried under soil to suppress odors.

@spikedpsycho I use a home made soil sifter with 1/4 inch screen over a wheelbarrow. After a year this compost is rich, dark and slightly moist, perfect for our planters. Same type as this one kzitem.info/news/bejne/oo6C3YGGrJ6Qnpg If you mean "mix it" while adding kitchen and garden waste, we just make sure to add layers of carbon such as dried leaves, thin cardboard and push down around the edges with a wood tamper.
@ultrablue
5 жыл бұрын
@spikedpsycho we did not have to mix it, after one season the finished compost is the same height as the lower door. Just shovel it out into the soil screener and sift out the undigested matter. The design of the center air stack in the middle of the bin works without the additional step of mixing the organic waste. If you wanted to stir it up as you go, you would have to manually work at it with an implement of your choosing.
