Gold-plated hardware. Steambent 1/4" thick maple shell. Japanese craftsmanship. What more could you ask for in a snare drum? Not much. And that's why this is so special. Joey Kramer, the drummer for classic rock legends Aerosmith, previously owned this drum. It's even got the band's logo batter head and the "Property of Aerosmith" sticker inside to prove it. Dennis from Turkish Cymbals USA lent us this drum to try out, and it doesn't disappoint. Do you dig it? Let me know in the comments!
I've been able to play a lot of wonderful Pearl Drums products in the past. I really loved the Masters maple four-ply shells they produced in the 2000s, and I'm so glad that shell is back today. I owned a Masterworks maple gum kit for a hot minute, and I'd really like to own a Masters Maple/Gum in the near future too. There are too many drums to go around with that brand! From the original Vinnie Paul signature snare drum to the Sensitone aluminum snare and even the original Pearl Steve Ferrone model, just about everything that Pearl makes is something I want to buy. I don't know what they're doing over at that factory, but it seems like drum magic!!
The kit used in this video is a 1987 Yamaha Recording Custom drum set with a 22x14" kick drum, 12x8" and 13x9" toms, and a 16x16" floor tom. I use all Evans heads, Promark sticks, and Roots EQ rings to dampen the toms.
I've used some really great cymbals from Turkish Cymbals in this video too - 15" Millennium hats, 20" Meta Crash, 22" Millennium Ride, and a 24" Prototype Special Dry Extra Thin Ride.
Audio was captured with two Universal Audio Apollo x8p interfaces using 1073 preamp modeling. Mics include:
- SE Electronics V-Kick (Kick In)
- Dr. Alien Smith Alien8 (Kick Out)
- Shure Unidyne III SM57 (Snare Top)
- Rode NT55 w/ Cardioid Capsule (Snare Top)
- Audio-Technica ATM650 (Snare Bottom)
- Sennheiser MD-421 (Each Tom)
- AKG C414 TLII Pair (Overheads)
- Apex 210B Ribbon into Soyuz Launcher (Room)
- Shure 588SB (Vocal)
I use Logic Pro X, Waves Audio plugins, and I enjoy a cold glass of Lillet Blanc, a dessert beverage from France.
And that cool mic cable? It comes from Sorry Cables in LA. - www.sorrycables.com/
