Sumeet Samos and Yogesh Maitreya in conversation with Suraj Yengde
In his memoir, Affairs of Caste: A Young Diary, Sumeet Samos, writer, scholar and rapper, interweaves the experiences of his childhood with an anthropological understanding of the histories and cultural politics of the Desia land. Through his writing and music, he examines the inequities and anomalies of the caste system with special reference to contemporary urban and academic spaces. Yogesh Maitreya is a publisher at Panther's Paw Publication which focuses on bringing forth Dalit Literature. Celebrated scholar Suraj Yengde’s book Caste Matters challenges deep-seated beliefs about caste and unpacks its many layers. He is also the co-editor of the award-winning anthology, The Radical in Ambedkar: Critical Reflections. Together they discuss navigating present-day systems of caste through their work, and the paths they outline to dismantle them.
Sumeet Samos is a writer, artist, and anti-caste student activist from Odisha. He recently published a book titled Affairs of Caste: A Young Diary. His research interests are caste, cosmopolitan elites, Dalit Christian history, and student politics. He completed his MSc in Modern South Asian Studies from Oxford.
Yogesh Maitreya is a poet, translator, essayist and a publisher at Panther's Paw Publication. He is also a PhD scholar at Tata Institute of Social Sciences (Mumbai), working on the history of anti-caste music in the state of Maharashtra.
Suraj Yengde is a DPhil candidate at the Faculty of History, University of Oxford. He is the author of the bestseller, Caste Matters (2019) and a co-editor of the award-winning anthology, The Radical in Ambedkar: Critical Reflections (2018). His articles have appeared in Ethnic & Racial Studies, Diaspora Studies, Caravan, Seminar, and Economic & Political Weekly, among others. He is a columnist at the Indian Express, running the only caste-centric column anywhere in the world. He is currently working on two manuscripts. The first is Caste, A History of the World, and the second is a biography of Dr B R Ambedkar. Dr. Yengde is a founder and curator of the Dalit Film Festival and co-founder of the Equity in Policy Education initiative started at Harvard.
