Seeing a lot of comments it’s not available in other countries. Sorry peeps, Calyx has been grandfathered along through cell plans over the years and that specifically doesn’t seem to be super in their control. This is unfortunately one of our few US-specific videos, but most of the other work Calyx Institute does is international. Checkout their site: calyxinstitute.org

Here in the UK, I gave u on wifi altogether after endless reception problems in my block. I ended up getting the open data package from my phone company and have tethered my computers to it. The signal can have problems, but still actually better than the wifi. Plus now, I can take it anywhere.

I used their internet service for several years. Was definitely worthwhile! But back in early May (I was notified earlier) they had to change hotspots. Since then, the service absolutely sucks! I've gone through their 3rd party support. Even obtained a replacement hotspot. Still sucks! Buyer beware.

Mifi 8000 is out of stock on their site. Between the 2 remaining models, Franklin T9 and the LINKZONE 2, which one do you guys recommend, if at all...and why?
@aski325
3 жыл бұрын
As their description from the website, I could say the LINKZONE 2 is more suitable for ppl who is considering using it outdoor since the long last battery 24hours, also it can be used as a power bank. But it can’t run without the battery. While the Franklin T9 may be a better option to use in the rural house. Although the battery only last for 8 hours but it can run without a battery if it is connected to the power source. Other than that, the band of these 2 devices is the same.

Serious question from the privacy POV: Do the devices have the option to not broadcast SID and randomize MACs? Otherwise doesn't it become a tracking device?
@jefflandale187

It's a regular hotspot operating on the Sprint (and soon to be Sprint/T-Mobile) network, so it tracks you as much as any other device with a SIM card that's talking to a cell network does.

From the Netherlands here, and I'm lucky to have unlimited 4g (and soon 5g) through my mobile plan, with the only nuicance that after 6GB of use per day I have to request another GB every time. This is probably to prevent me from using it as a mobile hotspot. It is pretty affordable, and does it's job perfectly; however, a truly unlimited option within the a mifi would be awesome. If I could completely dump my home internet, that would save me loads of money per month. I would take a small hit in speed, but for a much lower all-round price that is a sacrifice I would be more than willing to make. I can imagine this concept will be the future of the internet in a way. Why bother putting miles of cables underground if the wireless option is faster anyways?

The plan through Calyx May 2023 is absolutely throttled and I'm highly disappointed!! Signed up, got the hotspot box, and now after 50gb of usage got a message on the screen that says Sprint/T-Mobile have now reduced our speed. Lot of money wasted and too good to be true!!

@@techlore Thanks I already did before posting this comment. I spoke with first a rep and then wrote a letter to Calyx and both confirmed the same. After 50gb of data used they called it "Network Management" and speeds are reduced to barely usable right now. People need to know this before spending hundreds on this. Especially those that work from the road. Thank you for responding!

Doesn't using a mobile data connection reveal your identity when you're browsing online? (Like moreso than public wifi...)

If you connect to the hotspot via Wifi and Calyx does not have your identity, does this not give you a level of anonymity from cell company tracking?

Do you have to download a program compatible to have Calyx work? Does it work on a pay and go basis?
@jefflandale187
3 жыл бұрын
The hotspot is just a regular wireless hotspot running on the Sprint (and soon combined Sprint/T-Mobile) network, so as long as your devices can connect to a wi-fi network it should work. There's no special downloadable programs required.

If it includes the Hotspot device cool, but it's not affordable up front if you have to pay for the device and the service which looks to be in bulk and the cheapest option looks to be $150 for 3 months.

@@davidyummus6259 nothing bad just prefer a bigger screen and more functions like the mifi8000 its a solid device so far actually got 7mbps upload still not alot but better then 1 or 2mbps.. its a step in the right direction. i think its only rated for 10mbps upload thats another downside also battery life is roughly 6 hours maybe 8 but not a bad deal really if ypur near a plug since it works without battery
