This song just hits me like a train. I'm 30 now, quite accomplished man I thought but this song just made me realized I'm only the shadow of what I once was. As a teenager, emotions are so fucking real, love means the world and friendship is the priority. Now, it's all gone.

Personally I think their musical evolution has less to do with 'the times' and more to do with their personal growth as artists. They have grown, and changed. They are not a bunch of teens anymore - they have matured and so has their music. What I like about AFI most is exactly that diversity. I know if I am in a certain mood I can pick up one of their albums and it fits my mood. The next day, a different mood, and a different album. AFI is always growing, and that's why they are so good.

Actually, "emo" is just dhort for "emotive hardcore", a genre of music that originated from the post-hardcore scene in the 90's. Last time I checked, you can't actually BE a genre of music, so if someone thinks they can "be emo", that is a bit stupid. I agree with what you are saying

No one should even be arguing about this. Real punk is an act, a way of life. Being a punk you can be whatever you want, do whatever you want, listen to whatever you want. It's about being an individual. If you want to wear pumps, that will be very punk of you. Punk isn't a fashion statement, punk isn't a song on the radio. Punk is a way of life. So everything else is really irrelevant.

So you all wish to know what was lost. So you all hunger for the ship that was by waves tossed. So you all wish for the coldness of the winter frost. So you all wish that someone out there could pay the cost. Well the fraility of the kindness of humanity is just a crumpled rose of a thousand tears to me. To each his own, but AFI had a spattering of good songs from their old stuff. This one, God called in sick today, Days of the Phoenix, and Rabbits are Roadkill on Route 37 (i'm actually not sure how old that last one is). The problem was that they didnt sound original, and for the most part, it was purely screaming accompanied by the repetition of 2 or 3 cords. They hit gold with sing the sorrow though, which is a unique, melodic, and over all incredible album.
@extropian
14 жыл бұрын
Yes, a band needs to grow and change over time. But that doesn't necessarily mean the new stuff is better. I like Crash Love and December Underground too but songs like this, "Days of the Phoenix," "Prayer Position" and "God Called in Sick Today" are much more powerful and meaningful songs. There's nothing wrong with debating either, it's boring if you just like everything equally, and I don't think it's even possible, listen carefully.
@xPythox

@fragileguilt Yeah I agree with you to an extent however being a punk means being involved in a certain counter-culture and avoided established points of view (which is what you hinted at). Shopping at Wal-Mart, eating McDonald's, listening to Lil' Wayne, and joining the army would all be very anti-punk things to do. It means freedom from this fucked up culture we were born into and molded by. Breaking the molds and being free.

Music won't lose its ability to convey emotion till people stop making music or emoting, whichever happens first. People who mourn the loss of the "old" AFI and say, "Ain't nothin' like this no more!" could easily devolve into eyeliner-wearing versions of those old folks who shake their canes and proclaim, "Back in my day, we listened to REAL music! You rotten little kids don't know $#!+." There are other bands/composers/projekts that churn out tasty ear candy, and computers help you find 'em
@superman12211331

No. The music was very emotional (hints the word EMOTIVE hardcore), but the word "emo" just comes from the genre name.

@HannahPuget I might be inclined to agree with you if the "growing up" didn't include more make-up. I still prefer older AFI, but I don't really think AFI is a "battleground argument" band, you know? They were never really that impressive or talented, in my eyes. Still, their older stuff is nice to listen to.

I really wish people would stop fighting over silly foolish things its not going to matter it should matter at all what people say or do. I wish we a people could learn to be more then people who sit around and bad mouth and feel intitled to everything. just stop fighting its about music and the meaning behind it not petty disagreements or because a band changed there genera.
@HannahPuget

@thetornprince138 He has what it takes, BUT THE WHOLE BAND WANTED TO CHANGE. THEY LIKE OTHER MUSIC, NOT JUST PUNK. It's not what you want, it's what they want, they made the band, they'll do what they want. So shut up, and stop being selfish. If you don't like it, stop listening. They didn't sell out, they did what they wanted to.
