You can improve your freehanding, or painting as we call it, by doodling & drawing as much as possible. Get a sketch book & start as simple as possible, i.e. the 3 basic shapes (circle, triangle & square, no rulers allowed, no corrections allowed). If you're good at that, start doing the 3D version (spheres, cones & cubes). With those 3 you can draw / freehand everything. Watch professional artists always start with the basic shapes - there's a reason for that.

I also have a size 2... but that thing is too much of a chonker for me and is probably better suited for the work i start using an airbrush for. * Banner Cheat: Draw the image in an image editor (Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator works great), print the image, then use that as an underpainting (painting over the printed banner so that it doesn't look like it was printed). This also works for decals, which will always look like decals unless they're overpainted. * For organic shapes, Silly Putty works great as a mask. * For most freehand, a very dark underpainting works well for separating the device from the ground. (Paint in the dark color first, then leave just the edge of that as a darkline around the piece. * If you're doing a pattern (knotwork border, for instance), practice it on paper first so that you know how it works and so that you can center it where you want it easier. Really nice mudfish, btw.

I've only done a little bit of freehand, I just do a super rough sketch of the silhouette of what I want in pencil. You're going to cover it anyway and it really helps with staying inside the boundaries. Pencil might not go on very well on every paint, but it's not failed me so far.

The freehanding should also be shaded with the curves of the material. On that fan it was fairly flat, so not that big a deal. Not the case on other stuff. Also natural shapes can be pleasant to do because nature is messy. A basic trim of holly leafs on the edge of a tunic took all of 10 minutes, and made an otherwise boring holiday figure go from kinda blah to super cute. So what if a leaf isn't perfect - leafs aren't! Or fabric that has some spiderweb pattern? Hey, spiderwebs are messy. Get the main idea of it across in one area, then keep connecting lines as webs. Most ambitious I've done is an entire cloak on a 30mm scale figure to look like it was made out of peacock feathers. Each feather was painted individually. Took almost 20hrs.... but actually was pretty easy once I figured out how to craft each feather. Just a series of lines and dots. SO MANY LINES AND DOTS.

Stick masking tape to paper, run it through printer and then cut... Or buy cheapest label printer from Brother like me, it uses old heat activating paper (black or black and red, etc.) You can then cut it and use as stencil. Even works for etching with acid :D

Instead of masking tape I use vinyl foils for desktop cutting machines like the ones from Silhouette. After you applied them you can heat them carefully with an hairdryer, so the color cannot run underneath. Works like a charm. I also use vinyl masking tapes from 3M for masking non-flat surfaces and curves, same procedure here.
