From Berlin 1884-5, and the artificial division of Africa, through the early stumbling steps of independence from the 1960s, the crafting of reluctant nations within under-developed states, and finally the development in the 2000s of a diplomacy to address not only African problems but to teach the wider world possible lessons in inclusivity.
Stephen Chan is a George Soros Visiting Chair at the CEU School of Public Policy (SPP) and a professor of politics and international relations at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). He is the author of 29 books and has written most recently on Robert Mugabe, Southern Africa, and China-Africa relations. He has twice been dean of SOAS.
