It's lonely in care homes, Lonely, lonely, lonely, Family on their mind, Family, family, family, Many of us have lived and worked abroad, long enough to know what the reality is. Some of us have worked in Care Homes, others have inspected Care Homes. Some people end up in Care Homes because, they are too frail to look after themselves at home. Those with homes, sell their houses. It is the proceeds from the sale of their houses that fund their care in those Care homes. Only the wealthiest get to pay for private nurses etc. to look after them at home until they transition. From the North of England to the South, those OAPs are lonely, in Care Homes and lonely in their own homes. Their family members rarely visit them. Remember that Oyibo family structure is "nuclear," which is diametrically opposed to the "extended" African family structure, which is communal & supportive, not isolated like nuclear families. Up North in Yorkshire I remember the OAPs in Bingley (Bradford), Tingley (Leeds), up to Hull, Selby and York waking up, and getting dressed to go to Morrison's Cafe for breakfast just so they can be around people.

Its good to want to go back to Africa but if u no longer have family in Africa who will be helping you visiting you. Africa without family cousins etc can be very lonely nothing is closely reachable. Some get msids but maids can be cruel, steal from u, those ho hv fewcrelatives left those relatives may not care about u. Africans in Africa gave changed they are no longer close knit or as caring as b4. Those who still hv close family who can assist them its a different story for them.

Thanks for nailing it . This is an ongoing discussions with no end . The missing link for me is omission. Of insurance . Most nationalities take up critical illness , Accident and sickness , Life insurance that helps pay for these things , it’s a lot when you pay from out of pocket . As a financial advisor , once you tell our people the need to have a coverage for their family , they think your interest is on commissions which is the least of it . Maybe we can do a video and enlighten our community on the need for insurance as part of retirement plan in case of unforeseen circumstances .

It is not a romanticized view of Africa, it is a FACT that life in Africa is more relaxed than life in the west. What do people mean that they have lived in the west for so long and can’t adjust to life in Africa? That sounds like an empty boasting to me. There is no surprises anywhere if you have not been far away from your homeland and have been conversant with the system. There are white missionaries leaving the luxuries of the west behind and moving to African villages for the sake of the gospel. In the US, there are whites leaving the cities and choosing life off grid instead.

I don’t understand myself. When a lot of us first moved abroad, we said it’s because of the kids we are doing it. After 30years abroad you are now too scared to go home. Why are you afraid of the place that gave you life? How does anyone over 65 live in the snow and in a place where you are often stereotyped? I don’t believe as a black person you should be here after 70 if Nigeria is so bad go to another African country

I hear that argument a lot that people choose overseas so they could give their children better future. But here’s is the fact of life; some kids leave the family and never look back after graduation. Some refuse to get married or choose not to have children at all while their parents long to see their grandchildren. What makes a successful child goes beyond western education and a good job after graduating. May God help us raise godly offsprings.

@@ThisSideOfLifeWisdom - It is an open forum. People should be factual about their social media posts because a lot of people have been misled by this Japa Movement due to deceptive social media posts. Some people were faring well in Nigeria before they were deceived by social media posts that led them to uproot and sold everything for a life in Canada or UK; only to start from the beginning which took them like 15-20 years backwards. I have heard cases of those who made such moves and regretted it, Yes, anyone can retire anywhere they choose. But telling us on social media that Nigeria is not safe and that healthcare is a problem in the country is what I disagree with. If you have your money you can access worldcass care in Nigeria. How long is patient wait time in Canada if I may ask? A kid was having ear pains but could see the doctor in Canada for over 3 months. Family flew to Nigeria, saw ENT at UCH and problem solved in 3 days.

One thing that hinders our financial success as immigrants is the money stories we tell ourselves. You mentioned one: " I can't afford." As long as we're not asking how to afford it, we will keep struggling financially. I totally agree with you on each person doing what is the best for their situation when it comes to retirement. What I dislike is painting our decision in a way that gives a false impression to others about living abroad. It might very well be that because you lived abroad and had a good retirement savings that you can return to Africa. As I stated, to each their own. I love your channel. Keep up the great work.
