Oryza Glaberrima is the indigenous rice of the African continent. There are two main cultivated rice in the world, Oryza Sativa which is the native Asian white rice, and Oryza glaberrima which is the native African rice.
Oryza glaberrima is native to West Africa, it was first domesticated and cultivated in Mali, about 3,500 years ago, or more. it’s also grown in Senegal by the Jola people, Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, Zimbabwe, Zanzibar, and other African countries. Oryza Glaberrima has been called “the great red rice of the Niger”. Its bran, the covering, is typically red but different varieties can be range from purple to black. The plant of the African indigenous rice is said to have wide leaves and this can shade out weeds, it’s more resistant to diseases, and pests. It can also tolerate any water depth, infertile soils, and severe climates.
