Nice Video. They can look beautiful in a garden bed if you don't mind pulling off the seed heads, trimming out the brown leaves, and occasionally dividing. Thinned out looks so much prettier than shearing the leaves. But then I live in San Diego so they aren't affected by cold and look nice all year. And the profusion of white/purple flowers every 2 weeks is worth the bit of maintenance.

I am much more of a 'trimmer' than a 'dead header'....plants look healthier all year long instead of seasonal. Kind of like a haircut - you can trim it, but you can't make it bigger.

Hi so I moved into my new house and there was 9 of these plants, not knowing too much about them I treated them each a little different to see what works. So it's now smack bang in the middle of winter here and I have a huge amount of new flower stalks on the ones I was more harsh about cutting back the old stalks and flowers on. I also figured out that some new flower stalks come out of the old ones where they split into 2. So Im not sure how I cut them back? Do I just leave the fresh stalks and cut everything else back? Or do I continue on with experimenting with them and cut them all differently?
@battlefoxx

you can experiment. but, typically, you just deadhead the whole thing about 8 inches from the ground straight across. clean out the junk, then let it all regrow to new flowers.

Can you dry out the pods when whey are green to get the seeds? All the dry pods are seedless on the plants at my work.
@battlefoxx

I only pick the seed pods when the are dried out and just starting to open up; you usually get about 2-3 days in the process before they empty out. I haven't tried to have them dry out on their own though.

What fertilizer can I use to help my african iris put on blooms. Lots of foliage but few flowers. Mine are in large pots. Thank you for any assistance. I live in south Alabama.
@battlefoxx

Hi, I have 3 thoughts: 1) When grown in pots, one of the most common problems is overcrowding, so you might need to dig it up and divide the plant, 2) too much shade, they really like super full sun during blooming season, 3) you can try a 10-10-10 fertilizer to get the rhizomes established, this helps with the flowering (but only add fertilizer AFTER you water, otherwise you can burn the roots). I hope this helps.
@BamaCyn

@@battlefoxx I think it's a fertilizer issue. Divided last year and put in well draining large pots, trimmed dead leaves and full sun. I was afraid to fertilizer as I didn't know what would work for these. Thanks so much.

how do you control that plant from getting too big? Mine seem getting bigger and bigger every year.
@battlefoxx

Hi, every couple of years you need to thin them out and split them apart at the rhizomes, then replant. Also, make sure you hack them down to about 8-10 inches after flowering. Keep them cleaned out of dead blades and stems.

When you cut the pods off do you just do the pod or the whole stem the pod was on?
@battlefoxx
2 жыл бұрын
only cut the pod off and dead flowers. more flowers will emerge from the same stem. if the full stem dies or turns brown, then remove it. then, wait until the plant is totally dormant without flowers, and then heavily prune it back.

@@battlefoxx I noticed ours used to have flowers ... but now we only get one flower in the whole large plant if we are lucky ..... what can I do to get more blooms, more flower shoots??
@battlefoxx
2 жыл бұрын
@@gailseminara6443 Hi, maybe a few thoughts. 1) if it is blooming season, then cut off stalks who already bloomed, clear our any older and excess leaves. You want to have good sunlight down on the base of the plant (as much as possible) to encourage more growth and flowering. Water a lot about 1-2 times per week. 2) if after or just before blooming season, prune the entire plant way down to the base (about 2-3 inches left). Clear out any old junk. The plant needs lots of sunlight on the base to promote rhizomes to prosper and create new flowers. If it is too crowded ,then it does not like to flower.

How to hand pollinate dietes grandiflora and dietes bicolor
@battlefoxx
Жыл бұрын
I never tried since the seeds are so easy just to find around parking lots. And, if you want to transplant with the rhizomes, that is pretty easy, too. But, I understand the bees are not very discriminating when they jump from flower to flower, or plant to plant. I suppose you could just cut off the anthers and hand-pollinate a flowering neighbor....or use some type of shaking or bagging. Overall, though, they bud and seed pretty readily on their own (at least where I live in Sunny SoCalifornia)
