The weirdly human sounds of the African mourning dove - Streptopelia decipiens
One of the most surprising discoveries on my trips to Africa was the call of the African mourning dove. I was in Senegal in 2017 when I kept hearing this ridiculous sound over and over. It sounded downright artificial and comical so I brushed it off as something playing back on a phone, but eventually I saw a few of these doves in a bush and the sounds seemed to originate there.
When it finally dawned on me that the doves were making this sound, my first thought was how can I record this! All my rigs were in the field, so I put the Sony D100 in the tree and left it out there for a few hours. Luckily this didn't spook the birds and I was able to capture a few calls. This was a fairly noisy location surrounded by camps and small villages so it's not a perfect recording, but it's enough to showcase the beautifully odd nature of this bird call.
