Broken beat never really disappeared as such. Dubstep then Grime and now UK urban music in general took centre stage. For more 4/4 styles, UK Funky was at the forefront, then for a short time Soulful House was in fashion, then Bass Music, the post Dubstep meets House kinda sound. The likes of Henry Wu & K15 have definitely brought broken beat back into people’s focus.

what the hell happened to broken beat, around 2004-2006 it was awesome, then it simply dropped off the rader, no selling out, no fall in standards, no watering-down, it just stopped!! I assume it was london dubstep (which was awesome!) but it didn't mean broken beat had to go?
@cjurschik

You can read a lot of discussions about this in the internet. The bottom line is that it is a very niche genre, that mostly the same producers that were involved in its creation are the only ones that are still doing things for it (it is a very difficult genre), and that if you are interested in this stuff you can find this mostly in one place: London. And mostly around Peckham.
@DannySeventySeven
7 жыл бұрын
You're right mainly my friend, but 'difficult genre'? Simple to understand imo. Pushing boundaries. Don't fit the cliche. Musicianship, and the spirit of jazz. Don't settle for no shit. Go beyond, go deep.

It just never really caught on in the United States really, and that is a shame, it is the music of my life. I am a soulful deephouse lover but I will take broken beat over deephouse any day of the week.......I MEAN IT IS MY LIFES MUSIC PERIOD. None of my family or friends know what it is or listen to it. I happened upon it because of my desire to find out if there was some other music out there and BAM....what I have been looking for my entire life........and then......bam, it disappear just as fast........the best shit never last unfortunately.

I feel you. I was living in Spain close to Madrid and actually there were some guys that brought broken beat to poshy places like once a month. On Sundays. If I went there it meant that working on Monday would be hell, but actually I managed to see Domu, Mark de Clive-Lowe, 2000black and, well, Dorian Concept just on the verge of going popular. I had to go alone, on my own, something I learnt back then (it does take balls to club solo in a place like Spain, where socialising is everything. That happened to me with broken beat and many other genres (drum n bass, jazzy house...) until I decided to leave everything and move to London (where now I sometimes miss more punk-dance, more fun 80s non ironic non kitch throwbacks, but anyway). I mean, my story with broken beat and music genres in general is the story of independence: if you like something, enjoy it, and if your friends, family or any other people do not like it, then enjoy it yourself, just for yourself. Look at the events near you and attend the few that stick to the genre. End of inspirational comment.
