Go easy on me guys, this is my first After Action in quite a few years. Just getting back in to the swing. I do go a little down the tool clamp rabbit hole.
Glad you're back! Singing Tamiya's praise no less. Age and medical issues have caught up with me to the extent that complex, high skill level kits have become the source of more agony than pleasure. Tamiya's approach with their more recent kits has kept me active at the bench, a diversion I am especially grateful for. There are far more critics in the world of styrene models than necessary and I often wonder why they feel that nasty, left field commentary is so cool. Tamiya has aways set the bar for engineering, a fact usually ignored by these folks. I like to complete models for no other reason then that finished jobs are excellent motivaters compared to half completed disasters hiden away in the closet. Keep up your postive reviews!

My eye sight and available time have made me really appreciate the genius of Tamiya. I think perhaps I was too quick to ignore what an important part of the hobby they were. Very grateful for them now.

I've always enjoyed Tamiya kits. They may not be the most detailed but there is enough detail to make the kits a joy to build an when completed they look really good. Many of the so called experts poo poo all over Tamiya, but the new kits have come a long way. You don't need an obscene parts count to build a quality model.
@Panzermeister36
Жыл бұрын
Yay, you did film it. This felt like a true Adam Mann video to watch as it had just the right amount of clamp discussion along with the kit review. I have the T-REX tool clamps now and I will test them against MJ Miniatures. It's possible the Tamiya tools are very thick as I'm always using Dragon or resin aftermarket (Alliance Model Works) tools with the MJ clamps. I agree with your statement about making 3D printed clamps slightly oversized so that they actually can be used is more critical than 100% true scale. There's other things in our models like welds and rivets that are also molded on a little overscale so that they are actually visible. In this case, I feel like it's over to exaggerate a little so that these features are obvious....much like how we can take shadows with a wash etc. It's BS but you have to bump up the details a little bit since it's a model. Also, can you get someone to make wingnut clamps and jack clamps. We have tons of Type 1 and 2 on the market, but that's not enough when your Pz III or IV also has a molded jack with blob clamps right next to some filigree 3D printed clamps. And of course the Pz IV and Luchs need the wingnut clamps.
@AdamMann3D
Жыл бұрын
I actually almost mentioned the Luchs using type 3 but I thought that might be too much. The trick is getting off my ass. I have Panzer III/STuG jack clamps I made as that's what Tiger used. I'll send you the stl if you want to break in that printer.

Going with a few Tamiya kits to get back into the zone is the right approach mate. Instead of the individual tool clamps, which might or might not fit onto the tools themselves, why don´t we see 3D printed tools with clamps attached already? I think that might make life much easier.
@Panzermeister36

That's actually a good point. The tools we have are many times quite thick and so I have to thin down the end of a shovel or axe. We might as well just do the whole thing in 3D print.

The amount and quality of available aftermarket detail pulled us in way too deep, and in the quest for (unattainable) (and expensive) perfection we lost sight of the fun that got us into the hobby.
