If that train at Bath was used on a model railway, nobody would believe the motive power combination. Some wonderful shots there of, in many cases, very ordinary, everyday trains. How quickly the commonplace becomes nostalgia.

Watching your excellent videos is a reminder that we have lost so much rail infrastructure in the headlong rush for "progress" & "modernisation". Yes, there was much duplication and some lines had no commercial value or future but the tank train going to the factory now needs many road tankers as a replacement. Road transport, once seen as the future is choking on its own success. Rail's re-emergence time is here but to reinstate it is going to be costly. (I won't start the discussion on HS2....)

Wonderful photos and videos of days gone by. Now even the HSTs have gone, so two, maybe 3 generations of motive power since the end of steam. I know nothing of the Bristol area, but it's chastening to see how much railway infrastructure has gone since 1966. Although there is a fixation. quite rightly, on the S&D, to my mind industrial photos from a bygone era are often just as interesting as those glorious sylvan scenes. I used to photograph a lot of them but in black and white. Much more atmospheric.

It shouldn't be chastening at all, Nige. It should be uplifting to see the old useless railway buildings demolished and useful new housing put in their place. The recycling of land just like the recycling of steam locos is important. Cutting the scrap into small pieces to be melted down. A scrapyard scene, though not sylvan, is atmospheric. The clang as the pieces fall to the ground, small spirals of smoke rising from the cuts, with the air heavy, infused with the acrid smells of acetylene and burnt metal. The stark innards of the steam locos are highlighted against the moody sky in the setting sun.

Awesome footage of the Pannier in steam on 7 March 66. Also fascinating to see the ‘Teddy Bear’ coupled in front of the 47, I suspect to prevent a light-engine movement. Thanks for sharing ☺️
