I go to the Kenworth Cummins truck shop for genuine Cummins parts. I needed some exhaust gaskets for the exhaust manifold. The Dodge dealer wanted $22+ for each gasket and they only had 4 of the 6 i needed. I pulled the Cummins labeled part out of the Chrysler packaging and the Kenworth dealer sold me the exact same part for $4.22. I bought all six othat I needed and returned the other 4 back to the Dodge dealer.

What I've been doing is finding the actual manufacturer of parts. It's saved me big bucks on BMW's. Most vehicle manufactures farm out most parts to suppliers. The BMW fuel pump is made by VDO; VDO pump was $120, same pump from BMW was $580. Mass Air meter is made by Siemens; Siemens meter was $70, BMW wanted $260. He's right, you have to shop around. Finding the actual manufacture of the parts is a huge benefit.

I have had so many problems with rockauto, usually with them shipping out the wrong part and customer service could not care less. The last time it was lower control arms I ordered for a Saturn and they sent me lower arms for a chevy truck. Then you have to jump through so many hoops just to talk to a real person. "I said could you please ship me the correct part ASAP" No sir, not until we get these parts back but you could just purchase them again if getting your car put back together is important. "If I purchase them again, could you actually guarantee I get the correct ones this time?" No, we cannot guarantee anything. "OK, ill just go to the dealer from now on thanks." GM dealer was actually cheaper and was in next day, and at least my dealer is usually willing to move on price if I find it somewhere else for a little less money.

Found it when I put the wheel back on and the caliper was rubbing the wheel, AFTER I had bled the brakes... On the same job, Autozone sold me a mismanufactured soft line and the wrong pads... 2 hour job took 2 days and about 10 total hours to get done. I think I'm going back to Napa parts from now for that type of thing. Napa used to be about double the cheap places but now it seems they're only about 15% more expensive and I'm pretty confident the Napa stuff is at least 15% better. Rock is great for stuff like belts, hoses, spark plugs, etc, etc, where it's the same thing as everywhere else, but I think I'm going to stay away from major components from now on.

I always try to figure out what the OE supplier of a part is, and buy that part if it's cheaper than the OEM branded one. For example, you can buy a Delphi ignition coil for your particular GM application in a Delphi box or an AC Delco box, but it's literally the same part at sometimes very different prices. I think that's where you get your "medium" price parts in plain packaging. A few times when buying parts for my Mercedes, I got one from the OE supplier, and when comparing it to the old part, you can see where they ground down the Mercedes logo off the part!

I used to be a fan of Rock Auto. They had good parts at good prices with good customer service. In the last few years, however, I’ve seen a significant change. They now have less reliable parts (I had to return a cooling fan clutch for my 2006 5.9 three times) , but the absolute worst part is you can no longer talk to a human being in order to return/exchange a part. It’s all done online, and the process is extremely frustrating to say the least. I used to recommend Rock Auto. Not any more.

Factory 4.7 gas engine oil pans on dodges did the same thing, so it's a vendor problem not a seller's fault. I took make dad's oil pan off and just stripped it to a bare metal. I'm guessing everyone should do it from now and so on when I put a new oil pan on

I've never seen a pan that was painted on the inside, this is a first for me. But, I've also only worked on gasoline engines. Honestly, I'd have stripped the paint from the inside, thinking it was some kind of "sitting on the shelf" rust protectant.

I use Rockauto all the time for stuff. I've learned to buy the better stuff if I can. I've had crap belts & crap brakes from them. Advance Auto parts I've had an alternator have to be replaced multiple times, and had some brake shoes that had harder linings than the steel in the drums... Figure that one out.

Seems like some hate for RockAuto, we use them in the UK (we import and service/sell American vehicles). I can honestly say weve never had issue with them. Couple times something turned up damaged from shipping but they just Fedex a replacement within 2 days and say to keep the original. No quibbles.Theyre not all bad.

I haven't really ordered parts online, but I have ordered body parts for various vehicles off JCWhitney, and most recently a fender for a Ford Ranger. While the fender came in one piece, it had several small dents. Nothing that an experienced bodyworker couldn't cover, but still a little annoying. The biggest problem I have with them is their clunky website.

The symptoms remind me of a common problem missed by home gamers. My dad had a v-8 that always overheated but could never find the problem. Turned out he replaced his lower rad hose without putting the included spring inside it to hold it open. So car would run fine, heat up, then need coolant and the hose would collapse on itself and overheat. He spent a lot of time on the roadside trying to figure out that problem.

I had valve guide seals do that in a big block chevy. I will never have heads rebuilt with umbrella seals again.

I usually just get used parts. I’ve got a local guy who does part outs and I’ve never had a bad experience with him ever

The secret to RockAuto is if you have the option, don't buy the cheapest part, buy a step or two above that. In this case (i looked it up), they only have the super cheap oil pan or the MOPAR one. Of all the things that I would guess would fail on an engine, the paint in the oil pan wouldn't have been one of them.

Factory painted pans (eg Toyota) use a very high quality paint that’s very difficult to remove, even nitromors won’t touch it. I’ve tried.

I ordered a pan directly from the dealer for my 2000 Jeep grand cherokee. It did the exact same thing. The motor was having the normal 4.7 V8 failure already so I decided to replace the engine and noticed that this new pan I had put on the old engine was flaking the paint. Not sure why it did that from the OEM. I only had the pan on for about 1 year till I replaced the engine.

To everyone wondering why the inside of a sump is painted it comes down to the simple fact that oil floats on water. Since burning a hydrocarbon always results in at least H20 and CO2 there is always water vapor getting into the crank case from combustion blow by as rings do not make a perfect seal. Then this water vapor condenses when the engine is shut off and cools down. If an engine happens to sit a long time, have issues with crank case breathing, or a small coolant leak into the sump you will end up with a layer of water on the bottom of the sump slowly oxidizing the metal if it is unpainted. This is the same reason metal gas tanks would rust out over time.

Man I've had those pans leak, on hemi trucks, the gasket surface had ripples in the steel from the stamping process. Dorman or spectra, in a Napa box. Lots of issues with plastic parts too, window switches in particular, the plastics are not the same, just sucks

The most common problems I have had with rock auto is incorrect labels or measurements, or the complete lack of any information on the part whatsoever. I have ordered parts on multiple occasions that said they were correct for a vehicle, and when it arrived, it was for a completely different model or year.

That is unfortunate and I would not have thought about it either. I use Rock Auto all the time and have been lucky. I don't see how they can be at fault at all for this.Blame the DA factory in China that pained the inside to keep it from rusting. Hopefully this will save someone else from this situation.

They should be responsible because even though the factory painted it rock auto still sold a bad part.
