Thanks for this! I struggled with feeling okay with enjoying my aged care placement since my group mates hated it and frankly speaking spent the time doing nothing. It is reassuring to find that what you said aligned with my thoughts.

I think a lot of Nursing students think if they work in aged care once they have their degree they will be doing the showering, toileting, feeding and cleaning up of poo/changing people’s pads. When in reality at the facility’s I’ve worked at the nurses only do medications, whereas the AIN’s do the rest. It may be different in some places though, who knows. I was doing my degree but I’m now 4 months pregnant so have put it to the side until I’ve had Bub, in the meantime I’m working as an AIN and it’s made me appreciate our elderly population so much more!

Yes! Everywhere I’ve seen the RN’s don’t shower or do any ADL’s - it’s only on night duty that they will assist with that side of things! Whereas at the hospital you don’t have that kind of luxury!

That's true! On my aged care placement the nurses did medication and wound care. The PCAs were the ones who did the the feeding, showering etc

Yup. ADLs are done by AINs unless we are very short staffed then I go in and help. We do medications - esp s8s and injections. Wound care, ACFI, family conference, palliative care (butterfly, nikki pumps), urostomy, IDC etcs.

I am so glad that nursing assist me get the residency, and now I can use the residency to achieve my dream to study in biochemistry area to become a pharmacologist. By the way, nursing is a bit boring as the core of nursing is caring! I recon nursing is more suitable for the very caring person!
