That little kid courting Rhaenyra is a Blackwood, and the dude taunting him was a Bracken. They've been killing each other since the Andals arrived at Westeros. The bystanders were probably just rolling their eyes and thinking "Well, they're at it again..." That whole fight may have been a subtle nod to the book readers.

So, Alicent not looking like she's had kids is actually specifically something from the book. It's mentioned that Alicent had multiple kids and always returned to looking exactly like she did before - she only grew more beautiful, while Rhaenyra, once she started having children, packed on the pounds and lost a great part of her beauty. This is realistic. Some women can have kids and essentially go right back to how they were and some can't. It's all down to body type.

True, genetics do play a role but I suspect choices are the most overlooked. In reality women start "eating for two" and because they do this for nearly a year, they get used to it. So without realizing it they still have cravings and they still eat more calories than they realize because normal people dont count calories. But they start putting on the pounds and without realizing it they are 50lbs overweight and it can become a year or two long process to burn that off, which of course is very easy not to stick with. So, while people do tend to blame genetics, hormones and body type... I'd say 95% of the time, if not more, its choices those women make.

About child-birth we need to cut Rhaenyra some slack. She is a teenager who watched her mother constantly give failed births and later died giving birth. The reality might not be "that" bad, but for her, its a significant emotional event. One of the things I really like is how the relationship between Alicent and Rhaenyra is deteriorating. Despite all her attempts to stick her neck out for Rhaenyra and her rights when it would be SO much easier to vouch for Aegon like everyone else, Alicent finds that Rhaenyra has been acting like a spoilt brat, acting out to get attention and causing problems for everyone else. And the episode goes to lengths to stress how much Viserys has done to try and get Rhaenyra an appropriate match that satisfies her but she still spurns all offers, a situation Alicent never had yet it still isn’t good enough for Rhaenyra. You can see that while Rhaenyra’s actions are understandable as she’s being forced into a situation she doesn’t want, Alicent accepted her situation with diligence and grace and feels a bitter resentment towards Rhaenyra as she gets away with so much that neither she, nor any other girl in the realm, would be able to. The breakdown in their relationship despite Alicent’s best efforts to keep the family together is so well done, and I love it as much as I hate to see it.

Alicent seems much more mature and resigned to her role, realizing that the current situation may not be very enjoyable, but it increases her station and power. I don’t think Alicent resents Rhaenyra entirely. Yes Alicent does point out how spoiled Rhaenyra is being, but at the same time I think she’s also increasingly becoming sympathetic if not outright jealous of Rhaenyra’s refusal to be married. Rhaenyra’s comment about not wanting to be locked in a castle to give birth to heirs seems to have really hit a cord with Alicent, and the scene where she’s having sex with Viserys shows just how depressed and powerless she feels. So I think while Alicent is mad at Rhaenyra for acting so foolishly, I do think she also wants to preserve the innocence of her only friend due to how depressing and alone her life has become.

19:28: About the queen having two children and still looking the same: this is actually consistent with the source material. One of the gripes Rhaenyra later may have had with Alicent, at the point when they're both mothers, is that Rhaenyra herself loses a lot of her beauty and even grows plump after her pregnancies, while Alicent, who is nine years older than Rhaenyra in the book, still retains her very good looks. So I understand it may feel strange that she doesn't seem to age much, but it is something that's explicitly stated in the source material.

In an episode with so many great scenes, I think my favourite has to be the final scene with Viserys and Otto where he is removed as Hand. It is just two phenomenal actors honing their craft by putting these two extremely flawed yet somehow still likeable characters up against one another as you understand why Viserys has turned against Otto but you also can’t help but feel bad for Otto as while he is devious and self-serving, EVERYONE in this city is, and what gets him fired wasn’t his underhanded scheming but the one time he told the unambiguous truth when he had nothing to do with the events in question. Every second of the scene was just a masterclass of acting and I was utterly drawn to the screen; a superb job from the actors, writers and director. _(The only complaint I’d have is that it’s weird Baelon’s time as hand has been reduced from nine years to five days? I don’t really see the point of that but again, lore nitpick. 😅)_
@jester7786

I'll have to watch the scene again but I'm not sure that was what was intended to be said (re; 5 days) I read that part of the book again last night and it said that Baelon went on a hunt and complained about a pain in his side, then five days later he died. Masters did an autopsy and found that he had somehow burst his stomach lining leading to death. So I think that was the five days they were referring to... But I'd have to watch the scene again to refresh what exactly was said

38:20 The thing you missed is, that she didn't lie. She didn't tell the whole truth, but what she swore on her mother's grave was, that Daemon didn't touch her. Which is true. She can't very well tell her, that she isn't a virgin any longer, because she was so hot and bothered by Daemon not touching her, that she seduced Ser Criston Cole. That would not only be worse for her, than if it had been Daemon, Daemon at least is a Targaryen prince, but Ser Criston might very well loose his head, or at least his manhood, if she tells the truth. So this scene shows her having an, unfortunately very important, political skill: just telling enough of the truth that it is believable, but omitting everything that could be truly detrimental.

There's also a lot of discussion going around now whether Criston Cole really was willing to bed Rhaenyra, or if he just obeyed because he felt he had no other choice because of the power she has over him (as established the previous episode), making this a MeToo-style situation. I personally think Criston felt violated here, he put down his white cloak in a really respectful and sad way, that cloak is the symbol of the vows he swore and it's as if he doesn't want Rhaenyra to even touch it. Then the show cuts back and forth between the Viserys/Alicent scene and the Rhaenyra/Criston scene, which seems to imply these scenes are connected, and I think they're meant to be connected because they both show a very powerful member of the royal family taking advantage of less powerful partners who aren't in a situation where they can refuse them. And the next morning, Criston seems really upset and doesn't even want to look at Rhaenyra, while Rhaenyra is happy and inviting him to come closer again. That shows that Rhaenyra enjoyed the night, but Criston feels absolutely horrible.
@Ben-fk9ey

Yea lots of interesting power dynamics at play and I think that Criston is much more aware of the consequences (probably him being killed or something) if the secret about them got out than Rhaenyra is.
@trevordavis6830
2 жыл бұрын
Personally I’m not sure I agree that Cole wasn’t without consent or felt violated here. Even ignoring that Rhaenyra never made any threats or manipulations against him, Cole doesn’t actually work for Rhaenyra. Yes, he is assigned as her bodyguard, but his loyalty is with the Kingsguard and the King, both of whom have strictly forbidden him from having sex with anyone in general, let alone the King’s daughter. Unless Rhaenyra were to come up with some masterclass plan to frame Cole for something, which he should know that isn’t even in her nature to do let alone within her capabilities, the worst Rhaenyra could possibly do is remove him from her bodyguard duty, which arguably wouldn’t even effect him that much if at all. However, having sex with Rhaenyra is basically an act of suicide as the moment anyone else finds out, he’s a dead man. Not only did he break his vow of celibacy, but he deflowered the daughter of the man he swore to serve with his life. By all means, what he did was an act of treason so great that it would be punishable by execution. So the idea that Cole felt pressured to obey Rhaenyra when he knows how much more serious of consequences he would face by having sex with her seems weird to me. I get where it’s coming from when viewed on a surface level, but given the full context he should feel more threatened to not have sex with her if anything. I think the reason why Cole is so distant in the end of the episode is because unlike Rhaenyra whose just a rebellious horny teenager, Cole is an adult who fully understands how serious what they did was and how much it endangers his life. Hell, if anything now he actually does have to forever do whatever Rhaenyra says since all she would need to do to get him executed is tell her father the truth.

I love how they've truly entered the grey. Rhaenyra is absolutely lying to everyone, from her former best friend, Alicent, to her father, in regards to her exploit with Daemon, yet she has to do so to maintain her reputation. Again, while she is right about Otto serving his own ends and is doing best by herself to ensure her coronation, she is motivated more by short term, self-serving expedience than outright long term justice in forcing her father into a position where he should remove Otto so that Rhaenyra will agree to marry Laenor. Otto certainly is scheming to have his grandson, a male, be the heir, just as he shrewdly worked to place his young daughter in the King, her best friend's father's company, the moment he knew he could capitalise on and exploit his grief. Yet, at the same time he was truly telling the truth about Rhaenyra and Daemon. And again, Viserys is being a good, dutiful father by protecting his daughter's image, and in doing so is ensuring a renewed alliance with Corlys by upholding Rhaenyra's request, which in turn will see her agree to marrying the former's son and reuniting the houses. But again, he is removing an extremely capable right hand man, who he openly admits has served him and the realm greatly, on behalf of his daughter and brother's misdeed, which by reporting, Otto was acting faithfully to his King, even if it satisfied his own ends at the expense of Rhaenyra's and the promise Viserys made to her regarding the succession. Everyone is justifiably compromised in one way or another and it's simply brilliant to watch it all unfold.

A think Daemon really likes the princess because the vibe hinted at it in the scene where he gave her the necklace. This was before she replaced him as next in line to the throne. He also seems to somewhat care about Targaryen tradition, as he is the only one in the royal family that brings it up, and has done so three times that I can think of. I think those two reasons are enough for him to genuinely want the princess. That said, I believe his speech about doing whatever you want, taking her into the city, showing her the play, and taking her to the pleasure house were all calculated moves to make her his via deflowering her so no one else will want her. So why did he stop? I think he wanted to keep going, but he couldn't "get it up," and that is why he got frustrated and stormed off. Not only has he been shown to have problems performing in the past, but he was also drunk at the time, and either could explain the performance issues. Imagine wanting someone so bad, for so long, finally having your shot, and you can't get it up. I am sure that would be pretty frustrating and embarrassing, causing him to hit the wall in frustration, then leave in embarrassment. He wanted everyone to find out, that much was obvious, and I do not believe for a second he stopped for any moral reason. He planned every step of his deceit and followed through with it. Someone that determined doesn't strike me as realistically having a change of heart at the last moment, while drunk and aroused, especially not when the other person is pushing for it. Now, if she had been shown as "not saying no" as opposed to saying yes, I think his feelings for her would have caused him to stop, but not with her showing she wanted it, too.

The "50% death from childbirth" myth is hillarious to me. Humanity literally would not exist with such a low survival rate, it's pure math. The show's very example of that is the queen giving birth to a healthy girl, then 5 miscarriages, then death at childbirth with a live child. THAT is 1/7. Plus you have to remember the queen got pregnant when she was only 13. Getting pregnancies at that young of age before the body has fully developed can seriously mess up a woman’s uterus and ability to have healthy pregnancies. I think Daemon wanted for rumors to spread to ruin Rhaenyra’s reputation so Viserys allow him to marry her. Probably Daemon thought nothing happened between them so Viserys telling everyone these rumors are lies would be enough to restore her reputation. I also don’t think Daemon wanted to hurt Rhaenyra as Matt Smith & Condal said several times that he does love Rhaenyra, that’s why Daemon stopped & got drunk afterwards. Daemon regrets his scheming plan & probably realizes his love for Rhaenyra/his family is more important. However his initial plan backfired really badly, Rhaenyra was shown as grey character she really is.. the way she behaved in earlier Episodes & how she lied to Alicent can’t be blamed on Daemon, she’s slowly showing her true colors🤷🏻♀️ I wonder if Daemon & Mysaria were working together though..🤔

The only thing that's bothering me is the part when Alicent and Rhaenyra were talking in the Godswood anout the "coupling." She actually wasn't lying. During the "Inside the Episode" portion after the show, Rhae's actor explicitly states that her (Rhaenyra) and Daemon did not have sex, which justifies her swearing on her "mother's memory" when convincing Alicent. She may have sugarcoated a few details but she was telling the truth, and her first and only intimate partner was Ser Cole. Alicent was right to believe her
@JaySVG

And even when Daemon was confronted by the king in the throne room, he was "playing dumb" but rightfully so because he actually didn't go through with the "coupling" as he originally planned to. He saw she was too into it which messed him up so he left her there and kept on drinking. But even so, he knew the king only cared about "reputation," so he tried to use it to his advantage by proposing her be wed to him. He was also technically innocent but never defended it, which made the king do what he did.

*My* *Favorite* *HOT* *D* *Characters* *So* *Far* 1. Daemon 🖤 (was the least cool in Ep 4) 2. Viserys (Paddy is amazing, from 4th to 2nd) 3. Corlys 🖤 (absent in Ep 4) 4. Rhaenyra 🖤 (turning bratty but still like her) 5. Alicent 💚 (surpasses her dad this week) 6. Otto 💚 (his slander is getting obvious) 7. Criston 💚 (looked so torn) 8. Rhaenys 🖤 (let's see Meleys) 9. Laenor 🖤 (future hubby to Rhaenyra) 10. Laena 🖤 (she'll eventually marry a Chad) This is where I wanted the TV writers to take me. I want to be torn between choosing Rhaenyra or Alicent. They're now right next to each other this week. Maybe I'm still Team Black but I may end up liking Alicent a little more over Rhaenyra? Alicent is a victim to her dad's schemes. I probably still like Ray-near-ah more than Alicent even if Alicent has accepted her forced duties that she hates while Rhaenyra is acting like a spoiled brat about it. Perhaps too traumatized by her mother's death. I enjoy Rhaenyra's savage quips. I actually chuckled when she portrayed how really old Lord Beric is. Rhaenyra is like Dany/Arya but with a lot more sass like Olenna. The character who really is winning me over is Viserys. Yes, I'm aware of all the criticisms from the decisions he made. But I find him fascinating. He's more complicated than Daemon so far. And in the book, he was written as 2D. Paddy has added more layers to him. Enhanced what's written about him. I'm aware Alicent isn't popular among book fans. Most Greens aren't. But I like the TV version of her so far. While Otto hasn't been interesting since Ep 2, it's been Alicent who keeps improving each week. She started at 9th after Ep 2. Then 6th after Ep 3. Now she's 5th after Ep 4. Can't wait when Olivia Cooke takes over by Ep 6. I'm the type of viewer who can enjoy characters from both sides. What if I really like Aemond and Alys Rivers (Elizabeth Olsen?)? I'm not so black or white with characters. I can enjoy the baddies. And being an antagonist is based on perception. Maleficent and Cruella became protagonists to their own origin stories. Look at Cobra Kai. The writers made bad guys from The Karate Kid 1, 2, & 3 likeable. I love Johnny Lawrence and Chozen! And enjoyed seeing Terry Silver being more evil and Mike Barnes' return. For all we know, Targs are really the villains. We just don't see it that way because HOT D is based on them. Daemon was just chill in this episode. Ok, he was drunk. Seduced his niece. But how far did he really go with her? First base? But no bad*ss quotes or moments. Did rode Caraxes back to KL, had a pimp walk when approaching Viserys, and wore a cool hoodie like Anakin in Revenge of the Sith. But Daemon was the least cool/bad*ss here. Since Ep 3 was so bad*ss for Daemon, he's safe at the top for the rest of the series. What more could you want from him? He's shown a lot of great qualities as a likeable character after only 3 eps. Fearless. Heroic. Loyal to his family. A Robin Hood to Flea Bottom. He's also shown a few bad qualities like a short temper that diehard fans can overlook. Hey, nobody is perfect. He appeals to male, female, and queer viewers. Notice Ep 2 and 4 are titled after his aliases. Another ep will probably be titled Lord Flea Bottom. Daemon really has a lot of qualities from old heroes like Sir Lancelot and Robin Hood. He is a Prince who can hang around the Red Keep but would rather stay with the common folks and party in brothels. I bet when GRRM was writing that character, he was impressed how well he wrote him. GRRM is really more like Samwell, but he wouldn't mind being Daemon in his books.

I like the “add it to the chair” line because in some sense, he is paying respects to the king without actually paying respects. He doesn’t say “For you my king, the crabfeeders weapon.” He simply says “add it the the chair.” Daemon knows as well as Viserys that chair represents their family as much as it represents the office of the king. It is the legacy of Aegon The Conqueror. And in fact, by adding to it, in a subtle way Daemon is comparing himself to Aegon. I think this is also why he cuts his hair, both to show his maturity and to better resemble his twice great grandfather.

The only thing we see that would make Rhaenyera be a good politician is how easily and convincingly she lies to her best friend. Besides that, she's selfish, reckless, and shows no interest or care in making political allies (as seen in her interactions with the women of the court last episode) & her priviliaged disinterest in finding a suitor. In the garden scene when she is confronted by the Queen I don't think she did lie, or at least did not say anything actually untrue and lied by omission only. She was accused of 'coupling' and if as I think Daemon backed away before any actual 'coupling' happened and the brothel scene was foreplay only before Daemon thought better of it then her denial was true (good acting by Mat by the way, the moment when he questioned his own action was writ well on his face as he was thinking this was not the best idea and the choice of music there punctuated it well). All other references in that conversation were specifically about 'coupling' and all her words seemed to be factually correct in relation to the specific charge, even when she said Daemon never touched me the word touched was clearly a direct replacement for 'coupled' as he clearly would have physically touched her at some point in the evening. That she did not volunteer that it was on the brink of happening and she wanted it to go ahead or that she later seduced Ser Cole into her bed well these were things she had not been asked about. Daemon himself did not lie during his interrogation by the King, he never admitted the charge was true he just did not deny it and although he implied he did when he said 'better her first experience be with me than some whore' that's just a statement of opinion neither an admission or a denial. Seems to me they both spoke carefully, omitting anything against their own interests and allowing others own inferences to stand when they served them but not actually speaking anything untrue themselves, if the King thought her sullied then his original intent had been achieved even though he did not go through with it that's just politics.

Both of the them are rumored to be the father of her children when married to her first husband; Daemon is also a contender. They latter do end up marrying each other after the death of her first husband. Interestingly in the novel at least it’s implied that the Princess spurns Cole as he is the one who takes the lead in crowing Aegon king and leading his armies against her. Also Cole is a member of the Kingsguard who take a vow of chastity. Generally Kingsguard who break that vow wind up executed or at least sent to the wall.

I don't know how true this is but to me it seems like a likely explanation. Maybe even the reason Daemon asks the King to marry her. If his intentions were to just ruin her reputation to regain his position as heir to the Throne but changed his mind, the proposal may have been genuine.

The scene with Rheanyra and Deamon did not make much sense to me. The way the episode unfolded, I thought Deamon did what he did cause he knew Otto had spies in the pleasure houses to keep an eye on him. He knew he would learn about this and tell Viserys but since Deamon did not touch Rheanyra, she would still be a maiden if examined and that would be the end of Otto. However, he did not count on Rheanyra sleeping with Criston cause he left her unsatisfied so an examination would confirm Otto's claims which would mean Deamon's plot would backfire. But no, he pretty much admitted sleeping with her even if he did not. This whole affair does not serve Daemon at all; Even if Alicent says it serves him cause he lessens Viserys, he literally just made amends with Viserys. And if his plan was to make Viserys wed Rhaenyra to him it was a foolish plan; Viserys could simply disinherit Rheanyra and name Aegon the heir or he could even make his own truth of the events as Deamon told him and no one would dare doubt him. The whole point of the scene seemed to be about a modern take on female sexuality imposed on a medieval setting; That if Viserys and Deamon could feck around as teenagers, Rheanyra has the same right even if she is a girl. Also, for an inexperienced girl, Rheanyra seemed too eager to me. In the books Rheanyra is , at least, rumoured to sleep around so her behaviour would be better suited for an adult Rheanyra rather than her young version.

I liked how the fight between the suitors carried on in the background like it was just 'something that happens around here' and the camera treats it as inconsequential by focussing tight on the Princess and Ser Cole until the killing blow is struck. I don't think it is entirely inconsequential though, she said she could 'grow to like that one' when speaking of the younger suitor before he showed he was not going to be cowed by the bigger and obviously stronger suitor and then won the fight with a killing blow. I fully expect she will indeed grow to like that one when he reappears later as a grown man.

@@RedHood001-KA For sure! As much as I love Shad's reviews, there was some discussion from Nerdrotic and co about Emma D'arcy that was extremely distasteful. Her casting, along with Milly's (which came after Emma's), seem so thought out imo. I hope they judge her for her performance and not how she identifies.

@@jester7786 They are doing that from what I watched in that stream. Based on the writing of the show so far, the transition should go smoothly to show how much the characters have developed (Rhaenyra and Alicent). But yeah, the cast members would have to give a good performance to show that. Question, based on your description of the physical attributes Rhaenyra and Alicent have in the narrative, have you read the book?

You are aware a woman has zero control over the physical changes that remain after childbirth. It really is down to genes.

Really appreciate Shad acknowledging his biases. Some things are objectively good even if it isn't to your subjective tastes.
