That's a good trick never thought about a mirror, I do the "blackout" method as in "Lights Out", usually a full day not lights,day2 blues on lowest setting for only 2hrs, then back to sleep for another day, then by day three try and test the waters :)

Good idea, I have turned them off when adding a fish.. but never for a few days. Has it worked out pretty well?

ReefDudes worked every time so far, one spot fox face, yellow tang, falcos hawkfish, pair of clowns, starry blenny, filefish, chromis, black bar chromis, psych Mandarin, royal gramma, purple fire fish, not one fight, and this is all in a custom 44g , all fish healthy and fat, I may get some GUFF about that many fish or "no tangs under 50g shpeel, but no fights, no stress, everyone's happy and healthy..

I can second this method, worked really well when introducing a magnificent foxface to my yellow in the 180. I only have a handful of clowns, hawkish, cardinals, a wrasse, and wanna add a kole tang. May use the mirror for this time and see if that works for me too.

Thanks for the advice! I have a 55g saltwater FOWLR tank with two clowns, chalk bass, midas blenny (just added a month ago) and coral beauty (just added yesterday). When I added the midas blenny he was being aggressive toward the clowns and chalk bass (which had been in the tank for over a year). I tried switching up the live rock but it didn't help. The clowns have fought back (I witnessed one fight and I also noticed a torn fin on one of them) but the chalk bass is a wimp and swims away. I don't want to get rid of him because he's so cool looking but I also don't want my other fish to be stressed. He's been better lately - maybe he just needed time to adjust, and as you suggested I tried feeding the tank more often (I think I tend to underfeed because I'm so worried about overfeeding, plus this is in my classroom as I'm a teacher and I don't feed them on the weekends or over breaks). I was thinking that adding the coral beauty would help - already it looks like he's a little less confident because as you said there are now so many fish willing to stick up to him that he no longer feels like he's king of the tank. The CB doesn't fight with him but he's also not afraid of him, and the blenny doesn't seem to want to go after the CB. Been watching the tank for the last half hour and haven't seen any aggression from the midas blenny, although all of the fish besides the CB are on the left side of the tank while the midas blenny is on the right side where is hole is. I might try the mirror trick - do you make it fill the whole background or just like tape a small mirror to the side? So interesting to watch them and see how they work out these social/territorial issues....

I've never really had new fish bullying before in the 30+ years of keeping marines and the only thing I put it down to is I al ways feed my tank as I release a fish into the tank and that way the old fish realise that there's enough food for all. And if the fish are of a same genre then I will also dull the lights once the food is gone. Touch wood these two tricks have always worked for me.

Yes, once inhad shared my tip with Mr. saltwater tank, its "If u have a sump, with an extra space, just add that agressive fish in it for a full month. Then move it back to DT." Has worked always for me.

My setup is the most unusual you will ever come across. No skimmer no water changes. Im a regular youtuber. Thank you.. :)

Using this trick now to prevent a yellow tang from going at my new cbbf. Left the mirror up from lights off last night (aggression appeared as lights dimmed) to 4pm today. It distracted the tang the whole time. Once the mirror was added, the tang was nice until night time when aggression started showing. Leaving the mirror up another full day and we'll see how things go.

Sucks when you can’t find out why there is aggression. My tank is pretty lightly stocked and recently my blenny started attacking my chromis and after moving the chromis into a breeder box in the tank I found him dead a few hours later. Some fish are just randomly mean for no reason, it’s not always caused by a problem

My kole tang picks on my bicolour blenny. They have been out of Qt for 4 days now and I't noticing it more and more. Too late to give the mirror a go? How long would I leave it up for
@ReefDudes

I only needed to do it for a day, another buddy said he left it up for 3 days. Give it a try and see if the Kole distracts him self long enough for the bicolour to settle in

I had the opposite problem, my starry blenny was out to get my blue tang and just beat her so bad she was covered in bruises. I blacked the tank out for 36 hours and once I opened it back up the aggression was barely there and then stopped completely within a few days. Now they are best buds!

I have a bully, a tailspot blenny,....he bully's the smaller tailspot blenny all the time. Not just a little, but a lot. One is nice and big and fat. The other is skinny and stressed. I did separate the bigger bully out for a few hours,...But I don't really have a big enough tank to put him into, since my other salt tank has a Midas blenny in it already. Now if I was to put him in with the midas blenny, because he'd be the "new" fish, would he kind of have to step down in the pecking order? Or would he try to bully the Midas blenny too? The Midas Blenny has been with me for a few years, he's a big guy.
