Now the Apache uses new navigation tech. An actual moving map so they know exactly where they are. The early models didn't have that and situational awareness was degraded. After this incident he spent every penny he had to develop an identification system for combat and the Pentagon refused to address it. The Brits, French and USA ect have to this day not agreed on a system. Something as cheap as a $50 IR panel could have prevented this. Hell, the missiles they fired cost $34k each at that time.

It's crazy how the mentality changes. If it's the enemy it's fine, you can rationalize it in your mind that you are doing the right thing - even laughing about blowing them up and killing them. As soon as it's known that it isn't the enemy, they suddenly humanise the victim and feel the range of emotions you would feel for killing a friendly: remorse, regret, sadness.
@dontanton7775
2 жыл бұрын
That is because the military and political process (and these might be harsh words, but in a sense it is true) "brainwashes" us into demonizing the other side as something that is out to kill you, where you have no choice but to act. While the science of psychology shows us the opposite is true: The vast majority of humans have the same needs, same fears and same prejudices. Only a really small percentage of any human population is inherently evil. The others are not evil, but are mainly just acting out of an externally induced belief system. Which basically means: If I can successfully make you believe that I am evil and that I will kill you, you will shut down the part of your brain that reflects upon this. Because from a biological evolution perspective, the risk you would take ignoring me as a threat is too high and an error in judgement might cost you your life. Basically your brain will enter "better safe than sorry" mode. It is very easy to abuse, and it is how entire nation's populations can be made ready to kill. E.g. see Germany in WW2.

First warrior went up and a couple jumped out the second to assist. As they got to the first one the second they just got out of was hit. One of the guys that got out the second warrior was a good friend of mine Dave Evans. He died of cancer last Christmas. Said the sight was horrific. I was out there though not in that battalion. Neither Dave nor I nor anyone I spoke to who was out there blamed the Americans for it. From what I was told, they had to pick up bits and pieces of the two soldiers, or at least what they could find. By the time we arrived to the area where we thought we needed to be to drop them off it was pitch black for it was about 10pm. There was no moon out and from what I can recall, no stars so it had to be overcast. You literally couldn't see your hand in front of your face. Anyway, I was left to remain with the deceased while the other two soldiers went to find out who was taking them from us. They seemed to be gone for quite some time because my mind started playing tricks on me and I started to imagine voices coming from the body bags as the two soldiers were scratching to get out. At that moment the two arrived back to the truck and scared the crap out of me because I didn't see or hear them approach. After that I don't remember anything else about that night.

Jononutoob In the case of 91, it was Saddam. He invaded Kuwait by force and declared it part of Iraq. Westerners were taken hostage as human shields, with children being paraded on TV with Saddam. There were fears they would continue south into Saudi Arabia (and they did eventually, albeit briefly, capture a Saudi town) Now that's not defending what happened in 2003, but please note that in 1991, the war ended when the mission was achieved, ie, the liberation of Kuwait. Also remember that 1991 was far more of a coalition effort. Saudi Arabia played a major part in contributing actual military force, as did Kuwaiti soldiers who had managed to escape their home. It was ultimately the Arab nations that went into Kuwait first and officially liberated it.

The Gulf War used a LOT of new technologies, and, combined with the fact that coalition forces were advancing rapidly, it's not surprising that there were many friendly-fire incidents. But, as with all wars with new technology, the mistakes were analyzed heavily (to the point where videos like this were actually declassified), and we've made amazing strides since. Friendlies now have tons of IFF capability that they didn't have then. I also feel compelled to point out how right that historian was; wars are ugly. And friendly-fire incidents will always happen, though hopefully we can make them less common. The problem with all the people here in the comments is that they have never had to fight for anything in their lives, much less go to war. They don't understand that reality isn't black and white. They don't understand or appreciate how complex life is. They want a blue-pilled, sugar-coated story where the good guys win with no casualties or mistakes, and the bad guys lose and are forever condemned. But that's not real life. That is history that is written by the victor. In the US, and in most modern countries, we generally try to emphasize our mistakes (such as making this video public instead of hiding it) to give people just a little bit of perspective, but we're having trouble because the media now only cares about what is "politically correct", instead of what is actually true. They act like anything less than a feel-good, casualty free victory makes us evil. As if they expect soldiers to be gods, and be infallible. We need more videos like these being made. Ones that criticize constructively, but don't condemn. Ones that look at the whole picture and say "there was no bad guy here. Just good guys and regular guys that made grave mistakes." This is important, because every human being on the planet thinks they're right. People don't go to war just to be miserable; they do it because they believe it's right. But in all parts of life, no matter how righteous we think we are being, we CAN still cause harm, and we need to address that. No matter how good your intentions, you can make mistakes, and you must own up to them so that you can learn from them.

These are not terrorists they were fighting. This is the Gulf War. They were fighting a professional standing army. What was their excuse back then for dehumanizing their enemies? Same attitude was shown in the video clips for A10 Warthog friendly fire incident in Iraq War, yet again against a professional army. If they were not so gung-ho about killing people for adventure then maybe they would take more time to verify friendly from foes and these kind of accidents could have been avoided. They were not even willing to let go of two injured combatants. Thankfully their guns jammed.
@macgyver112
5 жыл бұрын
Dehumanizing has nothing to do with terrorism alone, it's part of how every military trains their soldiers. When you go to shooting range, you're taught to engage targets when you see one without thinking too much of it. You don't see any reference to humans at all, everything is just described as targets. Terrorism, brutal regime and so on are just one way to dehumanize the enemy some more if some soldiers feel hesitant to engage.

the pilot is sadistic, saying "do them motherfuckers" in the beginning. most of these american snipers are sadistic

+vwazp agreed, classless. Also love how they get all sad when they learn they killed their own, but doubt they would even shed one tear if it was an iraqi civilian.

vwazp oh man that's what everyone thinks, but when you yourself are being attacked, all rational thoughts go out the window and you don't consider whether or not the attacker has a family, job or life or whatever, all you care about is saving your own arse and doing whatever it takes to do that. The fact that these guys are flying in the sky, at a far off distance from their targets only excacerbates the issue of seeing fellow humans as targets. Much different to cases in previous wars where sometimes troops on both sides of battles would get separated and then get into a 1v1 deathmatch, only to realise that neither wants to die and that the war they've been fighting was pretty pointless. Then they end up being good friends after it's all over. Even though it's 1991, US troops were against an enemy blinded by religious hate and zealotry, and everybody knows how those are things that are _extremely_ - if not impossible - to overcome. In a 1v1, the insurgent would fight to the death thinking that: a) he was going to die, might as well put up a fight because 72 virgins and something b) this infidel doesn't follow the Quran, he will burn in hell and I am Allah's instrument. Unless of course both the soldier and the insurgent were under extraordinary circumstances and had to survive together or somehow just wore out from fighting each other for so long that they just gave up and realised how pointless war was and started getting along.

edbo10 it' brain washing, usa is really controlled by powerful and corrupt elites who wants to control world affairs just like colonial times. They started the middle east bs since Iran, probably earlier, recently they stepped too far with ukraine and putin bitch slapped them to wake them up, now they raped middle east too far and the islamists are forming a coalition. you do know they already legalized propaganda recently in usa right? i'm sticking my neck out writing this on the internet and i'm probably already on their list, but only because i'm mad that the original founding fathers' great country is now ruined by war monger elites.

Gun jammed. Apache systems not functioning. It's almost like the helicopter was telling them not to engage.

Those Soldiers in the APCs must have been shocked to think Iraqis could strike them so accurately. Must have been a nightmare.

The demonization of the enemy is very relevant here ! Enemy or friendly are still human ! The gung ho gloating is a terrible and evil trait that is often used to sugar coat killing. Where was the mercy (apart from the gun jamming) for the 2 soldiers running away ???? They should have had the chance to surrender, to put their arms up in the air, but no, you were going to finish them off ! Disgusting to the point of evil ! Have no respect for this cowardly behaviour, that's not being a soldier. So what's worse than this "friendly" fire ? The bravado nature of the pilots ! Shame on them, fools easily led by nut jobs.

Sorry to tell you but American soilders usely behave like orcs they join the war for adventure and fun. This is only possible because they always fight against completely outgunned enemies.

John Doe actually this is incorrect as this took place in the first gulf war. The lack of respect for their enemy is pretty sickening when you hear the laughing & "this buds for you" taunting....again remember these were not some terrorists they thought they were shooting. All around disgusting event. B
