I've always thought to myself that, when I'd grow older, I'd make sure to be more accepting of the younger generations than the generations before me had been. Beneath all the humor and wit of this skit, there is a layer of eerie realism that challenges that notion. I mean, Grandpa reminds me of our own grandparents... but Grandpa also kind of reminds me of us, too. Yikes.
@bobbelcher6742

In my case, I've always been soft with a grand-parent's anachronistic claims. They lived in different times, with different values, and if my time and my values deserve to be respected, then so do theirs, no matter how backward it might seems to me. If anything makes me go "Yikes", it's the ones who believe they're superior to their ancestors just for having been raised in a different time, and having more "evolved" values. Some of your values will appear backwards to your children, and some of theirs will appear degenerate to you... it's just the way of things. Who's to say that it doesn't even sometimes go full circle, and what's considered backwards become degenerate and vice versa ?

@TransparentLabyrinth
Жыл бұрын
I feel like your point is valid, but also, like... some of the stuff that's considered "back in my day" is just old people being resistant about the idea that they're supposed to treat human beings as being equals and not inherently greater and lesser based on a group they belong to that they have no control over. Accepting AI that is on the level of human intelligence would be a huge step for all of humanity to come to terms with, especially AI that is physically a lookalike and mimics the mannerisms and behaviors of a human so well, you couldn't tell the difference unless they told you. That's completely unprecedented in recorded history and so far removed from the normal understanding of human dynamics, I mean, we're talking about humanity having managed to create an entire species that is on the same level of awareness as it. So far, most of what humanity does that is new to cope with is create new tools. And much of the social upheaval stuff is not as new as it seems, with issues often being part of a long-running struggle or relating to something that has occurred before, but on a different scale, or through a different material context.
