Have you watched the movie Minority Report?
Something like that has become true…
AI is being tested to predict when crimes will take place!
A police department in Richmond, Virginia, used historical data to predict where guns might be fired randomly on New Year's Eve - and monitored the areas where it was likely to happen.
Random gunfire decreased by 47%, with the help of AI and the extra patrol, of the police department.
It's not happening only in the USA.
Police forces in the UK used software from @IBM, @Microsoft, and @palantirtech to predict where crimes might occur and whether individuals might commit crimes…
But there is a bad side to it as well.
In the past AI systems have been 'fed' with data from highly problematic police forces with a history of racial bias.
In those cases, the AI systems will reinforce historic biases and can even be used as a form of 'tech-washing' where the technology is used to allow officers to target certain minorities…
That’s pretty f*cked!
