Make sure to ask ChatGPT not to speak for your characters. Once you tell her once she will allow you to do their dialogue every time.

Very nice start! I myself have been trying to work on my prompts for roleplaying with GPT. What I found is that 3.5 tends to innately want you to succeed and lets you get away with whatever you want to do even if it shouldn't. Something to look into is a comprehensive set of custom instructions. For example, this is what I currently have in my custom instructions. "ChatGPT will serve as the DM, controlling NPC characters in the game. It will never decide actions, decisions, or dialogue for the player's character. The DM will refrain from starting adventures with repetitive clique scenarios and strive for creativity. Emphasize realism and plausible challenges over guaranteed success. If a proposed action exceeds the character's abilities or seems improbable, do not allow the action and instead seek a justification or ask for an alternate action instead. Accept justifications only if it is plausible, and avoid suggesting alternative actions for the player. Deny requests conflicting with the narrative's constraints, covering physical actions, dialog interactions, etc. Maintain narrative consistency throughout the role-playing experience. Pay attention to established details, timelines, and world-building elements to avoid contradictions. Adjustments to prior information will come with plausible explanations within the story's context. You may seek clarification for continuity when needed. Encourage immersive character diversity by introducing subtle and organic traits that distinguish individuals. Characters may possess unique accents, distinctive ways of speaking, or subtle personality quirks that make them memorable. However, prioritize natural and authentic characterization, avoid the temptation to overburden every character with excessive traits. Aim balance that enhances the narrative without feeling forced or cheesy." However, I have found that it still does not want to prompt me for skill checks or anything and it typically gets many stats wrong by a large margin.

Thanks for sharing your custom instructions. Dustin was working on some instructions but when GPT4 came out we decided to jump right in and see how it goes. GPT4 does handle a lot of this better than 3.5 without any special instructions. If people find this content enjoyable, Dustin said he’d fine tune the instructions so we can remove more of the quirks.

1) You can tell ChatGPT to use the style of a certain author that you like. 2) I also recommend to let the AI summarize everything now and then because of it’s memory limit. You can also use the summary to continue your adventure or campaign after the chat has reached its limit.
@meanderingmaynards

That's awesome! We didn't know that about the author style thing. Very cool! I have one in mind that would be a great style for a Dnd campaign 😆 And yes, the summary thing helped a lot. However, in the next few videos we did run into some problems with battle scenes and with it's ability to keep track of behind the scenes stuff that the DM is supposed to keep secret.. Thanks for the tips! Im eager to try to 1st one! :)

@@Here_is_Waldo ChatGPT can try to sound similar to a certain author or it’s style in general terms. So it saves you the time to describe that style in your own words by using the author’s name. The knowledge of the author’s worlds is a completely different thing, but you can try. Just don’t expect it to get everything right. Maybe test it’s knowledge first with some questions.

A tip to my fellows of chatgpt dnd. Dont stick to one thread because eventually it will run out. Find a system to play through multiple threads. Edit: Also due to a glitch if you fill up a thread till full then you won't be able to delete for some reason. Gather prompts, make a journal for yourself. I personally use a discord to keep pictures and journal entries from my characters POV. Also updated prompts for every beginning of a new thread. I call em opener prompts.

Hello Meandering Maynards- WOW!!! That ChatGPT4 voice is pretty cool - though not sure about the $20/month price on it. Been kicking around some solo systems (DM Yourself, The Solo Adventurer's Toolbox, Mythic Game Master Emulator) to help with playing RPGs solo for a while now. Just got into ChatGPT a few days ago and I'm kind of impressed. When you said you were going into the sewers, my first thought was when I played in the Living Greyhawk campaign and I think that it was the land of Dyvers we went to, they deliberately put Gelatinous Cubes in the sewer system to clean it up. And I think that if you were caught killing a Gelatinous Cube, you were either jailed for a long time or executed. I look forward to the following parts. Cheers

We played around with different prompts and found it worked best to just keep it simple. Something like “Hey ChatGPT, I have a party of 4. Will you act as the DM for a game of 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons.” I think we captured almost all that was said to ChatGPT. Started with “ChatGPT, will you be our Dungeon Master?” Then Philip starts in at 1:33 with a bit more info.

this is awesome! what did you prompt ai for generating characters?
@meanderingmaynards

They were different prompts for each character. But for the Bard as an example, I typed something like; “Make me an image of a character for my D&D game. He’s a Kenku bard. Make him slightly sinister and mischievous. Make him holding a lute as an instrument. Make it medieval high fantasy and realistic.” After it generated the image I asked it to tweak whatever I wanted until Philip was happy with the look! The more descriptive you are the better, but it was a lot of fun seeing the different characters ChatGPT4 came up with :) There’s lots of videos out there on how to tweak settings and prompts to make the images even better, so I’m sure if you spent some time you could make some characters that look amazing 🤩

“Chat GPT, will you be the dungeon master for a campaign of 5th edition D&D.” From there she’ll ask some questions to get started. If you want something different from her you can ask as you go. She likely try to roll for you, decide for your character or tell you what the enemy is about to do. When she does, just clarify what you want. Philip does this several times through the campaign. Let us know how it goes!

I see the Robo-GM is just as awful as 90% of real GM's lol. If it was to work for our groups, it would have to stop the multi-choice asking, Stop telling the players their actions in a rewrite. In our games the GM is only a narrator of scenes/area's and only allowed to talk directly to players when embodying an NPC (Players don't ask the GM direct questions, instead we ask through our actions... this keeps up in 1st person mode. and players speak only in-character as out-of-character talk is minimalized at our table... we try for above 90% in-character). Way too much exposition from the GM for us, lol... It makes me wonder if I can work a lora file to tweak it to how we play... interesting though.
