@@Andrea-LovesYouStill yes but capitalism needs customers. If there's no workforce, there's no pay. No pay means no customers. Result, capitalism dies. So either all production will become state owned and productivity will be spread throughout the population via the government. Communism wins! ...or, the tech corporations get taxed humongously and the, now unemployed, population is paid a ubi from the state. Socialism wins. Either way, capitalism will lose all meaning. This may be OK as productivity will hockeystick, so we can all live like kings in a world of exponentially escalating resources. I think that the cost savings will have to get passed down - but that doesn't mean CEOs won't still profit insanely. Remember: reduced production costs and higher consistent quality means there will be lots more competition - thus driving prices down due to easy, cheap market availability of most products. Once a stable base price settles, it'll then be a game of brand recognition and loyalty. It's the CEOs of the most frequented brands that will become the wealthiest.

That's not a desirable outcome, as it means losing the bone mass, muscle mass, and knowledge required for survival. Case in point, just because we've developed bicycles, cars, helicopters, and airplanes, does not mean we no longer teach our young to walk. That would be ridiculous, wouldn't it? Similarly, just because we build devices to do our work doesn't mean we shouldn't work.

One thing I hope robots will bring is better built technology. The one aspect of cheap manufactured products, especially machines, and electronics from China today is that the products don't last very long with what I assume is built in obsolescence. Robotics will not need to make short lived consumer products as a means to keep production high over time. Almost everything can eventually be custom manufactured on the spot according to demand by robots, and 3D printing technology. Importing consumer products will be extinct because most anything could be 3D printed, and / or manufactured by robots at any location.

I agree that we need to find ways to implement UBI ASAP. Hopefully, as the cost of highly capable humanoid robots "powered by" AGI/ASI comes down and prices of other commodities drop, UBI income will rise and support demand for products created by AI and robotics. If that happens, we can just roll more or less "seamlessly" into this new world. However, a big key to that is to begin introducing and implementing UBI NOW! If it is actually inevitable that we are about to experience drastic deflationary pressure due to massive increases in productivity caused by AGI/ASI and robotics, perhaps this will be a situation where a judiciously applied inflationary monetary policy can actually save the world. 🤔

Theoretically, robots would create a massive surplus of human workers. This would in turn drive wages down to a small fraction of what they are today. This means we would not be able to afford to buy things at today's prices. Producers (using robots to produce their products) would now have to lower prices in order to sell those products. And they could in fact afford to sell cheaper since their cost of production would now be so much lower. In other words, it would cause massive deflation. That deflation would work against anyone with pre-existing debt - including most governments - and cause a massive wave of defaults if not countered. In order to avoid deflation and inevitable default, governments (via the central banks) would try to create a more inflationary environment by printing money and sending everyone stimulus checks. Eventually, those stimulus checks would become permanent. In other words, we would have socialism which ultimately leads to communism. The communist government would likely try to purge society of anyone deemed difficult to control by their artificial intelligence (using our personal info collected by big tech companies). This would be met with war on a scale never before seen. Every new technological advancement brings us closer and closer to this inevitable war. Is it any wonder that billionaires are building massive underground bunkers to hide in.

Those AI tech leaders that have mentioned UBI are already backing away from it, as would be expected. The libertarians and neoliberal economic types that dominate AI tech whether it's large corporations or open source are the last people that are going to be willing to redistribute their profits, or be taxed for the government to do so in the form of a UBI. IF some form of UBI does happen it will be at the expense of existing safety net programs and will not come close to being sufficient to pay for housing, healthcare, food, utilities, transport, and the list goes on and on. Furthermore IF such a UBI is distributed it will require biometric identification and surveillance to track what your purchase along with a social credit score to determine if you are worthy enough to continue getting it. Can't you just smell the free dumb?

I am not too convinced that humanoid robots will make a huge impact in production. I work in a factory where production is already fully automated. People only do very complex manual tasks. Human hands are very difficult to replicate with a machine. I think humanoid robots will replace a very few of the tasks left to automate but it will not be the huge disruption it is being predicted. The disruption has already been happening for many years with all kinds of automation and robotics.

Satisfying work has given humans one aspect of _purpose_ also referred to as "something to do in life". If humans keep inventing ways to remove activities that give us _purpose_ in life, don't we lose interest in life? Without _purpose_ we quickly become bored, aimless then lethargic, and eventually lose all interest in living. A few movies have explored this issue such as Serenity (on the planet Miranda), and other shows that suggest AI becomes sentient and rises up against it's makers. Either way, these issues are what Malcolm expressed in Jurassic Park, "Your Scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should".
