In its 2-beat form it was mainly transmitted in Occitan-speaking areas as a children's nursery rhyme 3.
Some sources believe the wolf, the fox and the hare (or weasel) in this song represented the King (Nobles & Lords), the Merchants (bourgeoises) and Church (Clergymen) all authorities who raised taxes, overcharged prices, scammed and exploited the serfdom leaving nothing for the peasants.… (The Tree and Sprouting Bush).
