QUESTION 1 is from a beginner studying the Yoshinkan style of Aikido who , with a busy schedule, can't always get to the dojo for training. They asked Ando Sensei if the had any tips for effective ways of training that can be incorporated into daily life. Ando Sensei suggested:
*Climbing the stairs two at a time! Something Shioda Sensei also did, climbing any flight of stairs two at a time will give you an effective lower body work out and strengthen the leg muscles!
*Try to sit in seiza in your daily life. Ando Sensei always sits and eats his meals in the traditional Japanese style in seiza. Also a lower body workout that will improve flexibility.
*When he was an uchi deshi and he rode on the trains, Ando Sensei had a small flat piece of metal he used to put between his knees. This made sure he kept his knees pressed tightly together since if the relaxed slightly the metal piece would fall with a loud noise! Another effective lower body work out. Also, if standing while riding the trains, Ando Sensei would use only his little finger to hold on to the hanging strap. The little finger is important in many techniques such as nikkajo or sankajo.
*Seated training with a wooden sword, swinging it to the left and right is also excellent training for strength and flexibility in the lower body. Make sure the sword is aligned over your knee when cutting down.
*A healthy lifestyle rhythm is important! Early to bed and early to rise! Ando Sensei always gets up at 4:30 am - he believes it's essential to wake up and breathe in the first fresh air of the morning.
QUESTION 2 is from someone who had heard that Ueshiba Sensei, when asked "what is Aikido?" had replied that Aikido changes daily. They asked how that is reflected in training at Ryu Dojo. Ando Sensei replied that Ueshiba Sensei's Aikido certainly did change and evolve if we compare the pre-war and post-war style of his techniques. At Ryu Dojo, although we study the set forms left to us by Shioda Sensei, even within those forms there is constant change and evolution. For example in tai no henko (1), the angle of the front foot when moving forward and entering has changed and evolved as Ando Sensei has studied and come to a deeper understanding of the movement and how it appears in techniques. It may seem strange for people who are watching older instructional videos produced by Ando Sensei so please try to watch his most recent productions!
QUESTION 3 is from Ryu World Affiliate Dojo Sho Ryu Kan in Colombia. They ask about how Ando Sensei has previously talked about vertical movements in Aikido and how is that appears in jiyuwaza which has a more circular flowing image. Ando Sensei replies that the hands in jiyuwaza most clearly express this vertical movement versus circular horizontal movements. Try to maintain an awareness of vertical movements along the center line, especially in the movements of your hands.
