However, its just barely older variant (2008 as opposed to the 2012 of the AIM-9X Block III,) the AIM-9X Block II began delivery to the armed forces in 2013. The Block II adds Lock-on After Launch capability due to the addition of a datalink, allowing 360 degree engagements on compatable aircraft. ...and yes, it can still lock onto the Sun.

The *missile* knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the *missile* from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position that it was, is now the position that it isn't. In the event that the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn't, the system has acquired a variation, the variation being the difference between where the *missile* is, and where it wasn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it too may be corrected by the GEA. However, the *missile* must also know where it was. The *missile* guidance computer scenario works as follows. Because a variation has modified some of the information the *missile* has obtained, it is not sure just where it is. However, it is sure where it isn't, within reason, and it knows where it was. It now subtracts where it should be from where it wasn't, or vice-versa, and by differentiating this from the algebraic sum of where it shouldn't be, and where it was, it is able to obtain the deviation and its variation, which is called error.

@@koekiejam18 If a pilot releases chaff and flare together to avoid Electro-Optical Targeting(Tracking), isn't it ECM?
@koekiejam18
Жыл бұрын
@@cliksmart No, just because you combine Chaff (electronic countermeasure) and Flares (IR countermeasures) against EO Targeting it isn't suddenly ECM. The E in electronic stands for the countermeasure, not the device you are countering. Flares don't spoof radar, and Chaff doesn't spoof IR, (most if not all) planes allow you to choose wether you launch flares or chaff so a situation where you launch both is rather uncommon. There are automated systems, but these almost always launch chaff exclusively. Unless the plane is equipped with some form of Missile Warning System, in which case they are able to launch flares. But again only if an IR missile has been detected. ECM is made up of a couple of item (most prominently Chaff and Jamming, although towed Decoy Pods also exist, and they are pretty neat!) So TLDR, if it is both chaff and flare it would just be countermeasures, hope this helps!

The missiles can easily take down an aircraft but airforces, the world over, prefer not to put a warhead in most of the missiles during testing! The reason why is so that they can reuse the drones.

At this rate, in a few years becoming a fighter pilot will be a job just as boring as all others (no offense). I am obviously not speaking in terms of combat, as sentiment has no place in the primal necessity of survival and victory that war dictates, which can only be achieved through technological supremacy. But I just can't see the interest any more. Fighter pilots will be more akin to airborne hackers and computer geeks trying to outsmart each other with the more clever use of their powerful on-board sensors. No more close-in fighting, and when it happens, it will all be about all-aspect super-agile missiles doing all the work for you against supermaneuverable aircraft that just don't seem as amazing any more, even though in a way they are. At least back in the '70s your radar had inherent limitations, and the dogfight was "honest". Now the only limitations are the other guy's jammers. Pretty frightening, but also somewhat disappointing.

The missile knows where it is, at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't! By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is, whichever is greater, it obtains a difference, or "deviation". The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the missile from a position where it is, to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position it wasn't, it now is.

Yeah the AIM-9X COMPLETELY changes the game when it comes to dogfighting. You no longer need to be behind the aircraft you are trying to shoot down, you only need to be within range.
@TheNicestPig
Жыл бұрын
R-60, 73, AIM-9L already did that. All aspect was a thing since the... late 70s? AIM-9X was developed after the US got their hands on East German R-73s and found out it completely outclassed anything in American inventory.
@willymac5036
Жыл бұрын
@@TheNicestPig good god you’ve drunk a LOT of the Soviet Kool-Aid, haven’t you? The R-60 had ZERO off-bore sight capability. It was a very agile missile, but when it came to targeting all it had was an expanded +/- 20 degree infrared field of detection. Even the Russians never claimed the R-60 had high off bore sight capability. Russia DID claim that the R-73 had high off bore sight capability, and they were telling the truth, if you consider a 40 degree field of regard off centerline as “high off bore sight”. Literally no one else on earth considers 40 degrees to be high off bore sight. ONLY the Russians. You see that a lot with Russian gear. If they can’t meet the standard, just lower the standard. The AIM-9X can literally lock onto and hit aircraft at a 90 degree angle from its centerline. In testing, it’s even successfully hit aircraft that were BEHIND it. That is an entire different world of capability than the R-60 or R-73.
@TheNicestPig
Жыл бұрын
You never mentioned anything about off-boresight in your comment, only all aspect capabilities... R-60 had limited off boresight, and R-60M, an all aspect seeker R-73 was developed in the late 70s, AIM-9X in the early 2000s...
@Julio_Tortillia

@@TheNicestPig R-60 and 9 Lima arent HOB missiles, and they dont have TV so theyre not that useful in 1C close range dogfights. Also all aspect just means the missile can track jets from all aspects, not that they are HOB missiles that have extremely small turn circles. Just because a missile is an all aspect missile doesnt mean it can do a 180 degree turn within 2 secs after launch to intercept a enemy fighter in a dogfight. Also while the R-73 was a good missile, it didnt outclass everything. US 9Ms had better flare resistance and the main use of the R-73 was for dogfights, but US focused more on BVR capabilities rather than WVR. The US has always had the better Fox-3s and Fox-1s so they always had the range advantage, why should they focus on short range AAMs?
@TheNicestPig
Жыл бұрын
@@Julio_Tortillia Read the original comment, no one mentioned HOB, only the ability to launch at any angle and not needing to be behind the enemy, that's the capability of all-aspect missiles, not HOBs. (In fact the dude probably realized this because he deleted the reply i replied to) Better Fox 3 only after 1991 with the AIM-120, and not really because Russian fox 3s are simply not comparable, take R-37M for example, it is currently racking up kills from 150-200+km, but it's an extremely big and heavy missile that's only feasible and useful for specialized aircraft like MiG-31. Early R-77 falls short of AMRAAM at range but began to catch up around the time R-77-1 and newer variants. And the part about Fox 1 is just false, R-27 and before that, R-24, just completely blow any AIM-7 out of the water, it isn't even a contest. The USSR had BVR advantage outside the F-14 and its AIM-54 (which is a heavy anti-bombet missile with low G overload, mind you).

The shot down all the QF-4s, and have moved to QF-16s, which are way more maneuverable so they can simulate MiG-29 and Su-27/30/35 performance with no pilot to limit the Gs. The US has more live missile shoot-down experience than any other nation on earth, and we upgrade the systems based on performance requirements being fed by USAF Materials Center FORMAT exploitation programs.
