I had the privilege of training under Grandmaster Darcy many years ago. He is a great person/instructor and coach. I note from the piece above that he still has great empathy with all students and is a great inspiration to them. Well done GM Darcy.

How does the blackbelt patterns go in AIMAA? Is Se Jong the 9th Dan Pattern? I thought it was Tong-IL
@andrewj2927

They use the ITF classic pattern set (without the sine wave and the forced breath). Traditionally, though, you would be correct, Gen Choi would have required Tong-Il to be used for 9th. However, schools don't have to follow that route, I've been to some who changed the order at the higher end (and even subtracted some from the early end, not sure why). It's also possible that it is not covered here. I find, though, that the form demonstration itself is not particularly complicated (other than the number of moments to be remembered) so much as the applications that can be used for the movements. If an instructor finds innovative or unique uses for a technique, s/he may push that form for a higher rank requirement.

@@andrewj2927 so I had the privilege of training under GM Hee IL Cho,and I have his books, and he definitely doesn’t do all 24 patterns, he sticks with the original 20 patterns. But i am uncertain at what blackbelt degree he has his Masters perform them. I know 1-3 dan is the same as ITF, however he doesn’t do eau-am I would like verification on this but this is what i believe Found the 3rd volume too. I wonder if these patterns are in order? That would mean some belts have 2 patterns. So chung moo 1st dan Kwan Gae, Gae bek, Po-un 2nd Yoo- sin 3rd Choong jang 4th Ul- ji for 5th Sam-il 6th Se jong, Ko-dang -7th Choi-Young 8th Tong- IL-9th

The Tul in question were created long before the ITF. If you have any further questions on the history please let me know and I can direct you to some accurate information.

@@eljudiodeoca5130 The ITF was founded in 1966. Tae Kwon Do was created in 1955. Both by General Choi so in a way it’s not fully incorrect to associate the patterns with the ITF but only if you consider the eleven years in between. General Choi oversaw/ created the patterns that’s for sure. It’s also correct to say that they came from many other forms/ hyungs that were performed by the nine Kwan’s that eventually combined to make Tae Kwon Do. These ITF patterns as you know them are TKD patterns and not ITF patterns. That’s worth considering. What I’ll also say is that General Choi (after he created the ITF) did alter the patterns and continued to work on them. That is true. However, many of the original Korean masters would have learned them well before the ITF was even a thing. I hope this helps. The ITF is a wonderful organisation (although there are many ITF groups now since the General died). Try and widen your education by reading as much as you possibly can.

When Grandmaster Cho (then Master Cho) was chief grading examiner of Great Britain’s largest organization then TAGB, he too would have obviously seen big differences in how his own organization the AIMAA and the TAGB performs the patterns. He would never criticize that, but looked for total commitment, realism and power as well as the physical and technical ability. Both organizations are not affiliated to the ITF but have their own interpretations without changing the fundamental set moves of the 24 patterns developed by Major Choi. Both don’t use sine wave and favour hip twist for power. Go with what you think is right for you rather than letting politics dictate what is the right or wrong way. Many organizations have broken away from the ITF for various reasons but that’s another story.

Both men are accomplished and technically sound. But physical conditioning should be emphasized at their age. Losing some fat around the waist would help their kicking a lot. This style of TKD is great overall. The practice of the ITF forms with power and without the sine wave bs.
