I had the same problem -popping out of drive. You will likely have to make the adjustment shown here, but also check to insure that the vertical piece that the adjustable slide is on is not bent forward a little bit. That, ultimately was the issue with mine. Even the Troybilt service center didn't discover that. I hammered it backwards until it was straight vertical and it solved the problem.

Thanks for the video. I’ve got an 1987 Troy Built Horse. Looks like it operates much the same. I can’t get reverse to work because of the same problem you had. Unfortunately I can’t seem to fix it. I removed that spring and removed the set screw but the shaft that should slide up and down is seized. I sprayed liquid wrench, blaster. I injected as much grease as I could into the hole where the set screw was removed. Applied heat. Even screwed in a grade 8 bolt into the top of the shaft. Really cranked on it but it felt like the bolt head was going to twist off before that shaft would turn. I finally had to give up on it. Tiller runs perfect except for no reverse

Hold the presses! I got your problem figured out. I bought a tiller, well a pile of tiller for $10 at an auction this weekend. In the process of seeing what I have to fix I discovered the hole for the reverse spring shaft is bored all the way through the cover. Take the cover off and drive it out from the bottom. I bet you will get it. The previous owner put two belts on it locking it up. He took it a part and could not see what way wrong and gave up. What a deal.

@@KevinKalden Unfortunately my dad just picked up the tiller. He lives 3 hrs away. But when I get it back, i’ll have a look at it. That might be a few weeks/months. I am wanting to get reverse fixed tho. It runs like factory new with the exception of reverse. I’m not sure I follow you... You say the hole for that shaft is bored all the way through? OK, I didn’t know that. But what “cover”? Are you saying if I look underneath the tiller I will see some sort of cover that is bolted in place that keeps the shaft from falling out the bottom? Let me know. If so, that’s good news. Should be easy to drive it out from the bottom. I can’t wait to get it back so I can give it another try. Thanks!

Thanks for your help I got the spring and plunger removed and cleaned them up. Now my next question is when you go to reassemble them how far down do you place the plunger. Do you slide it in until the plunger the (skinniest area of the plunger which would be the bottom ) where the retaining bolt first makes contact with the skinniest part of the plunger or do you slide it in until it goes to the very top of the skinniest place on the plunger at the top. Thanks again for your help.

Remove the snap ring on top of the spring. The shaft is probably frozen if the shaft was floating as it should it should drop down far enough for clearance to remove the spring. There is a set bolt on the LH side that hold the shaft. It might be tightened too tight keeping the shaft from moving. Its probably just corroded though.

I go over this in another video but will answer your question. If the pulleys on a shaft are of different sizes which most are then you can’t put belts on both sets because it will be like running a car in two gears at the same time. The machine will be locked up. The different sizes of pulleys gives you two speed options by moving the belt from one set to another. Check our my other videos and please join my channel.
