Do you keep it outside during the winter? I live up in Marysville and tried air layering. It worked. I just need to cut and pot.

Great job! I keep them in an unheated greenhouse or garage during the winter to be safe.

is it normal for a harvested air layering to have a slow growth the following season? thats what i noticed to my deshojo which I collected from air layer
@MomijiEn

Yes that's normal for the first 1-2 years till the new roots establish themselves in the new soil/pot.

i just harvested my deshojo air layer last week. what i noticed is that the air layered tree is now turning to fall while the parent tree still has lush green leaves. is this normal?

It happens. As long as all leaves are not turning brown, it should come back fresh next Spring. You may want to reduce some leaves if there are too many.

Nice! Much faster rooting than cuttings indeed!

Having retired I had the time to layer my Shindeshojo using low branches. I tried air layering with Spagnum moss, ground layering with soil only and ground layering with Spagnum moss. They all took and I now have 3 small trees for bonsai. Now that I have confidence I will air layer the top of the parent tree as mine has grown too tall as well. Great video.

Thanks for watching and glad to hear it was interesting! 🙂 Yes, it's pretty important to decide where to air layer and what angle to cut the bark especially when you want to use both parent and child trees as a bonsai tree.

Won’t it have weak roots not being on a grafted acer palmatum?

That's what I hear a lot but mines are doing just fine so far. :)

Very exciting! Is this the same air layer that you wrapped it with moss?

This one is still doing great. For this, I used a small plastic pot with akadama inside.
