Remember warm air rises but heat moves from a warm place to a cooler place, many people loose a tremendous amount of heat thru the floor when they don’t insulate under them !!

Another good thing about spray-foaming behind the boxes is that it locks the box in place, especially multi-gang ones. The box won't flex around when you're doing the finish electrical, which aids in getting the switches/plugs nice and flush.

With some practice you can squirt in just the right amount. If you over-do it you can whack it out with an old steak knife or something and start over. It's a bigger problem around doors and windows-- too much will jam them shut. When the "energy crisis" hit in the late 70s I remember lots of homeowners showing up at their custom builds with an armload of spray foam, plastering all their doors and window margins. Next weekend they'd be out there painstakingly digging it all out after it expanded and jammed everything.

Here in Denmark, it's a big NO NO to use foam where water can get in contact with foam (at least PU foam), because the foam acts like a sponge when it dries and retains moisture. That can lead to rotting wood. Is it different in the US?

I was just looking at spray foam to plug light leaks in my darkroom (and it's cool they make black foam that works nice for that application) but one thing I found was that the window and door foam has a much lower coefficient of expansion than the general purpose stuff so that it doesn't over expand and jam your jambs. (See what I did there?)

@@timmstiegler4156 I used XPS for insulation between studs when i did small bay window and foam all around edges. Before i covered that wall there was small cap between XPS and sprayfoam on wood foam was still well attached. So it didn't stick well enough for XPS. Foam actually didn't crack it came lose but foamed seam wasn't air tight, so it might came lose if movement is too big but flexible foam will prevent that.

@@PerkinsBuilderBrothers I thought you guys were going to do something together? Oh well. He seems to be well educated on building science, if you can afford to build like he does. It's a huge investment they are paying for to not have a clue on what they are buying. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and comorarity!

Risinger would spend 10k on house wrap alone. He would probably fur all the walls in 4 inches or something ridiculous so he could meet some silly rating. Them Perkins boys don't need Risinger
@AussieInSeattle
3 жыл бұрын
There is a "KZitem gap" between risinger type builds and doing the bare minimum or just above it. Missed opportunity in this episode I think. No blower door test seems like an obvious one since you said you're trying to minimize energy use for its lifetime. Could still do one after insulation but harder to fix issues.

In Denmark foam is a big NO NO.Because the foam attracts humidity and holds it ,the wood rots over time.Only breathable materials as insolation.And between doors an windows,they put special oil based silicone,water and vapor tight..That is the best way of doing it
