Hi Dan, I know it’s been five months since this video but we got a 2015 X5 (f15) in the shop today for low rear suspension. I knew it was coming in and watched you vid to become more knowledgeable. The vent vent on this car leaks down on random occasions. I’ve used the link in this message but can’t find a vent valve listed. Just because most mechanics use the parts cannon until car is fixed, or until they get fed up and seek help. I suppose they have a lot of air springs fails, and usually, replacing them is the fix. I think that this car should have been fix by BMW under warranty, as it's a 2017, and they offer at least 2 years warranty here in Europe.

Another good one Dan! This actually happened in our shop on a Range Rover a couple of years ago, and it took my (self-proclaimed Genius) boss 3 days to fix it. By chance of course, and only after replacing almost all the components in the air suspension system . When nothing else worked, he said "We might as well put a new compressor in (another $1500) so we'll have a complete new system. We'll tell the customer that everything was destroyed in the accident." I'm sure most of the parts were ok, but we didn't get involved. He always said " I WILL DIAGNOSE AND TELL YOU GUYS WHAT TO DO". Later on he bench tested the old compressor and sure enough it didn't produce any pressure.

Swap the hydraulic lines on the swing motor at 3,000 psi Whatever was stuck broke free. Reinstalled the lines back swing action works fine. Customer was amazed & able to finish his job, it's fun to fine the cause of the problem. I did replace the hydraulic filters once the machine completed it's job. I had fun explaining to the reps that built the machine. Luckily my boss videoed the whole thing to cover it under warranty. The noise of the pump gives it away. Most pumps fail because the airbags leak so the pump is always running causing it to fault out. Don't forget the airbags. I've had more airbags cause the issues depending if the vehicle is parked level or in a driveway up hill. Vent valves go bad due to water ingress causing corrosion. Good informational video. As per BMW, the parts come as 1 whole kit.
@Uninfluenceable
5 жыл бұрын
FYI, for any of you DIY'ers, you can buy a new vent valve for $40 USD from AliExpress, that is really one the most common parts that fails on these new style Wabco pumps. The soft flexible membrane piston rings last much longer on these than the old plastic styles piston rings, so you don't really loose compression from the cylinder. And while that reed valve looked rusty, they still function just fine after a cleaning. Don't pay $650 USD for a new rebuilt pump, it's super easy to change the valve and dry out the desiccant . If you really need a full rebuild, do it yourself. All of the parts are available and there is not a lot to it. I have rebuilt over a dozen pumps for family and forum friends and takes 20 minutes max, mostly waiting around for the desiccant balls to dry out in the microwave. I do understand why Dan replaced the pump though.

It's not super common in The Netherlands to launch a boat. People that own boats, mostly have it in dry docked, close to their house or in a harbour. People generally use a towbar to hook up a trailer of some sort for vacation or hauling purposes. I own the exact same model of this car, and i've seen 2 moisture issues before: 1 where moisture enters the roof lining via the trunk lid. The other one is similar, when opening the trunk lid and the drain holes are clogged, the water runs all the way down towards the fuse compartment. I replaced a relay that was soaked and made sure to tie-wrap it higher. I've also replaced the Air suspension springs because mine were leaking, so it would be the first thing to do on this model, since it's a common fault.

Excelent fix Danny thank you for sharing! It was a nice detail to set the language in your scanner to english for this video. I'm about to get a whole box of those blue rubber special multi purpose tools you have! This video reminds me a similar problem I had with a Porsche cayenne Turbo, It was my first air suspension ever, I remember the front of the vehicle was really low so checking air suspension for leaks with some soap and water mix I found that the front left suspension was leaking air so I went ahead and replaced both front air suspension air bags (They sell it apart as one piece on ebay instead of the whole assembly) and also replaced the right side height sensor because the arm pivot was broken, after that for my surprise I could not raised the car with a bi-directional scannner command and also could not even heard the commpressor activating so I checked signals, activation relay and pressure and determined that the compressor need it to be replaced, I did and that fixed the problem, I remember the customer was very happy about the fix but asked me a very simple question I could not answer at that time... he asked me why the compressor failed at the same time the front left suspension failed? After further research I found out that when a air suspension is leaking (In this Porche) the ECU monitors the car height through the "height level sensor" and sends more air to that particular suspension to keep the car height leveled but by doing that the ECU keeps the compressor running more than usual, sometimes depending of the leak it can keep it running all the time and that actually overheat the compressor and eventually damage the unit. So I learned that we need to check first the compressor unit and then also never forget to check for suspension, reservoir tank and air lines leaks in this systems.

Great video, very informative and further investigation at the end helped even more - my pressure release valve is stuck in closed position by the looks of it - you just confirmed my line of thinking - it works fine when pumping the airbags, but it won't drop the pressure when commanded to do so by the diagnostic tool (ISTA in my case). Will look into buying replacement part as the compressor works fine, but it obviously needs control both ways. It wasn't a problem due to one leaking air bag, but now it can become a problem when the system will attempt to release some pressure, for instance when it will try to drop the car down if load is reduced. Thanks! Subscribed!

From my experience, the compressors usually fail because of leaking air springs that are not replaced until the compressor fails. When that happens, people realize the springs have failed but replacing them doesn’t fix the problem. I have had people replace compressors with leaking springs, only to have the compressor fail again from overuse.

BMW and Wabco ought to be ashamed. Same problems as before. Even the E61 had the same problems 15 years ago. Pump is placed inside a shield where mud/gravel/moist can come in but not out. And Wabco pump quality is poor. Should have a fail safe switch to turn off when air spring leaks too much.

it actually does shut off once a leak is detected, (pump not reaching required pressure within given time, 15s I think), and it will NOT allow you to turn it back on during that drive cycle even if you push the raise button, it instead give you malfunction message. However this pump shut-down feature resets every drive/ignition key cycle, so owners tend to ignore it and just keep driving with a leaky air spring. It's a user issue, not a pump issue. I would much rather have the pump come back after a key cycle and at least get me home than have to take it to the dealer immediately.

it is extremely scary to know that there are workshops out there replacing the whole air spring assembly without performing a basic air pressure check. That's worth repeating in uppercase letters with an exclamation point on the end so as to emphasize my point. REPLACING THE WHOLE AIR SPRING ASSEMBLY WITHOUT PERFORMING A BASIC AIR PRESSURE CHECK ! That has to be incompetence at its worst and has just made my top ten list. It appears you have your fair share of monkey mechanics in your native land as we do here in Australia. Any way Dan, Your videos are great not only because you know what you are doing but also because you add a nice touch of humour - It looks like you actually enjoy yourself unlike others in this field who hate what they do. What sort of an outfit gets itself (and its trusting customer) in this amount of trouble. Dan you say in the comments that they were under "time pressure" . That's because they spent their time replacing airbags at the customer's expense. I would be ashamed if I had to have another tech tell me that the pump is bad. The "time pressure" line is designed to stop the reader from thinking any further--- something they themselves are very good at.

I was hoping the Technicians in Holland are a lot more informed. Since the tests are more stringent and there are more regulations. It's the same as here in the U.S. where any Hillbilly can open a shop and swap parts.

**corroded on outside = corroded on inside** maybe I'm falsely blaming engineering when it is in fact upstream STOOGE departments cutting corners/by force. the BEAN COUNTERS, they have to make themselves look useful somehow ;) only if the further upstream folks new how they were driving everything into the ground and bilking the cash cow out from under them for personal gains.. I need to shut-up and quit ranting yet again.

Another great video. Very detailed and easy to follow. Your videos have a lot in common with South Main Auto. Eric O will also tear down defective parts to show what went wrong. It amazes me how many shop referrals to diagnosticians have to do with a failure to check the basics. I'm going to try not to get angry the next time I call the cable company for a problem and they ask me to check that the box is plugged in. Looking forward to the next video.

Dan, great video. I replaced my E70 airsprings and the air compressor is not working/pumping air(while the car is still jacked up). Can it be I need to lower the car to activate the level sensor? Also, I drove my car for 250-300 miles before the replacement and I read many posts saying the compressor will actually shut down in sleep mode to avoid overwork and needed BMW car diagnostic software to active/wake it up, true? Please help. Thanks

Nice one Dan, It was good to find out what caused the failure. And even better to know after market parts are available to rebuild it if required. All too often the end user is unable to get the parts to rebuild (See Range Rover) With it being just two years old would the warrenty cover it? I guess BMW should really re design the pump system to ensure dry air in all climatic conditions

I suspect that I have a similar problem with my Citroen C4 Grand Picasso. Mine will pump up but will drop down overnight. If I raise the suspension to above the normal ride height it will stay up when the engine is turned off. That's why I suspect that the air springs are fine.

A new compressor from Citroen (no point taking a chance on a used or reconditioned item) is nearly £1,000 so I converted it to coil springs as fitted to the lower models (mine is a top-of-the-range Exclusive which has the rear air suspension as standard). I bought some aftermarket springs and bought the spring bases & bump stops from my local dealer. Total cost was under £200 and I used the diagnostic software (Diagbox) to disable the suspension ECU and pulled out the fuse for the auto height correction function. I don't have any error messages or warning lights on the dashboard but it does generate a couple of error codes.

Nice one again Dan. I always do the finger test first on a pump quick & simple. There’s one more check I would have c/o & that’s check the air inlet for blockages. I have had several cars come to me for testing for a parts warranty claim but after testing found the air inlet filter blocked with mud. Interesting to see the solenoid was at fault my guess was the piston seal worn a common fault on MB Keep the informative videos coming 👍 All the best, Madds

Can you tell why this wasn't covered by factory warranty, being so new? Also, be glad you have not worked on mid-90s Lincoln Mark VIII. Multiple air ride issues in that car, compressor, air bags, desiccant, almost all long term moisture exposure related. In later years companies came out with mods like spider valves with air system moisture separators that kept the intake and exhaust air drier before it reached the compressor and vent valves better.

Hi Dan! Tx again for your detailed explanation and nice video editing. It shows that you put a lot of effort in your vids! Regarding the subject of this episode I’m curious about two things: 1. A 2017 car should still be under warranty so why wasn’t it repaired by the dealer? 2. Who is going to pay for the unnecessary replacement of the air springs? 2nd question might be tricky to answer here, I’ll understand if you can’t.
