Thanks for posting this video. That is too much fun, toodling around at a few hundred feet AGL, checking out the neighbors' back yards and who's sunbathing around the pool. I'm glad the FAA adopted the EAA's recommendations on Sport Pilot category aircraft and pilot qualifications, since it opens up this kind of flying for fun. Regular aircraft are so much more expensive than they used to be, and not because they provide better performance. Rock on.

I had to comment on this.... I've been flying certified aircraft for many years. I bought an Airbike and when those tires lifted off the runway...I WAS HOOKED! At my last company, we had a pilot that left his keys in the lock for the nose bay. ( It was a cessna jet)About half way through the flight, the light for the 'door unlock.' came on. The captain asked him where his keys were, and after a pat of his pocket, the FO realized that his keys are now somewhere in Indiana. Anyway, there is a dent on the engine cowling from it. He almost took out an engine.

I just bought an Airbike that looks identical to this one. Haven't flown it yet since the weather here in Colorado has been nasty. I'm a Mooney driver with 350 hours, but no tailwheel time. Is the Airbike squirly on landings? I'll be flying off a dirt road as well, will it be forgiving like grass? Keep the video's coming.... I love seeing the pilot AND the airplane together in the video.

@h2otek (from Dad) Legal Part 103 AirBikes have flown, but with engines that were rather marginal. The AirBike in the video is an Experimental - Light Sport Aircraft (ELSA). An FAA-issued Light Sport Pilot certificate is required in order to fly it. For an ultralight similar to this, consider the Legal Eagle.

The max weight for a legal Part 103 ultralight is 254 lbs. This plane is just under 300 lbs. That puts it into the Light Sport class. As an amateur-built plane, it is Experiment, hence an Experimental Light Sport Aircraft (E-LSA). Once the plane gets out of the ultralight class, at least a Sport Pilot license is required in order to fly it.

I am with you, but the problem is, that you would need to make a tradeoff by getting rid of the safety belts. Cause if you lose control I am pretty sure you don't really have the time to unbelt. So you are basically left with ballistic parachute or safety belts. I would go for the belts, cause its way more probably that something goes wrong during start or landing and in this case belts are just more useful.

There not expensive. You can pick a good one up between 5-8k...if you can find someone selling one. When people own them, people love them so much they want to keep them. I have two, and I'd sell one for 7k. Ton of fun!...and cheap to fly!...plus you don't need a license to fly it since mine is classified as a true ultralight. However, I have over 600 hours my Mooney, so I'd advise training regardless of the requirements.

My Dad owns the Airbike. I will ask him about the tailwheel issues for someone that has never flown taildragger. The only thing he flies his off of is grass strip....and it handles mowed grass nicely. He did remove the wheel pants just to keep them clean. Thanks for the comments on the video! @godseykj : (from Dad) Some tailwheel time in something like a Champ or Cub would be highly recommended. While there are some differences in the way the AirBike handles on the ground, it is still a taildragger, and must be treated as such. It isn’t difficult. It is just different from a plane with tricycle gear. Most of my fixed wing time was logged in Aeronca 7AC Champs.
