Ed I have done a few bike tanks and fenders like this. I switched from the spray bottle to using a different style hair brushes and dippin n flickin. Also a tooth brush to make smaller droplets. Another cool effect is using a garden sprayer and set it as restrictive as you can so only a mist comes out. Like spraying a car panel start the spray outside of the work surface and don't stop until you are past it.

Thanks Eclipse55,I will keep it in mind.Originally for this project I had intended to mask each droplet individually, but I might also spin the whole car on "the rack" at my shop....tilting it so that each panel is perpendicular to the floor...but filming a new tv show (airs in june on the travel channel) has monopolized the lion share of my time. This job has been on the back burner while I've been painting a series of monster trucks and semi-haulers for an off road performance company.

Dear mr Hubbs! Iam a tatto artist, and iam thinking about airbrushing. It interested me in my child age and my interest still groving for airbrushing. I have tried it before. Now i would ask you, if is better get some cheap airbrushes up to 100$, and learn the basics, or i should get some more quality stuff. I would like to remind u that i`am have experience in fine shadowing and hand techniques, but i`am still an amateur in airbrusing. PS you are one of the rare people, they know what they do.

You can make them using masking techniques. If you want let's say one hundred droplets it's gonna take you too long. But if you just want a bunch of them you can get some perfect looking drops in any surface no matter the angle. Anyways, for horizontal surfaces, the technique Ed is showing here is great, easy, and the result is just awesome. If you are interested in learning the drop masking technique I've got a video on that. I hope it's helpful.

On painted plastic it has already had a adhesion promoter on it so you can sand it and seal it and base it.BUT if it is raw plastic like a bumper that you get from a dealer for a new car then you use the adherto on it.

Superb effects. Thanks for taking the time to show how it's done with such clear instruction too. Great skills. I'm assuming this droplet effect is only really effective on flat panels that can be led down horizontally due to water run off? For example have you tried the same effect on a helmet or a similar shaped object?
