Hi Josh. Sorry about your weird experience in Mozambique. I am Mozambican and once I had to "rescue" a friend who went through nonsense trouble on arrival in Maputo, allegedly because there was an error on reading his passport data. It turned out later that the computers at the immigration were not working properly. When I asked to see the screen I realized it was clear enough to the reader to tell my friend was the legitimate owner of the passport. By that time he had already spent 20 hours at the airport, with no access to food, no access to his checked luggage and no permission to enter the country. Fortunately I was able to provide what he needed to survive. All that probably only because he (and I) did not bring the officer any "chocolate". My friend now tells me he will never come to visit me in Mozambique again. So sad!

@@robertdaniel5461 It can be considered acceptable in diplomatic terms that a foreign GOVERNMENT can take your passport in the case of a bona fide criminal case to prevent a foreigner from fleeing. But the passport is the property of the US government and a private airline company has no standing to take it from you. Before you surrender it, a quick call to the US Embassy is in order. The US embassy should be able to advise you. They could suggest that you surrender but send them a picture of it so they could reissue a temporary passport if you were left stranded for some reason. Or they might advise not to surrender and attempt to intervene with the airline and that country's government (not so likely). In any case, I would at least try to contact them locally by cell phone while at the airport and ask for advice before giving it up, IF you are not in legal trouble. After all, it is US property that the airline is trying to take from you and they may have standard policies and certainly can assist you with a replacement as long as they are aware of the abuse of that govt's diplomatic imperative to allow you freedom of travel across their border. It doesn't seem like a hard thing to do and one should always have embassy/consulate contact information when traveling to different countries.

Hi Josh, Thanks for your clip. It brought disturbing memories from my trip to Maputo last year. The people OUTSIDE the airport are lovely, but the airport.... Especially on my departure, no wifi, and corrupt customs officials... I was stopped at customs during my departure process and was asked by several important looking officers " what money do i have to buy souvenirs"... I said that i have hardly any cash, and that i will buy souvenirs with my CC... Than they called to chief officer who requested to check my wallet.... I kept playing dumb, knowing exactly what they wanted...after 20 min hold up,the bunch got tired of me and let me go free. On one hand it annoys me, but on the other i know these gov employees make redicilous salaries, so who can blame them? Very sad. BTW, i stayed in the famous Serena Polana Hotel, even the Q of England stayed there once...:) Not really expensive, around 170$ and well worth the special ambiance and good old days gone. Any how, on another topic, the B762 still flies for UTair in Russia, especially on long haul like Moscow to Anadyr. Cheers. Cheers

Even if you have a visa in advance like I did, the immigration officers will take the passport and ask for chocolate, candies what have you. It’s pretty much normal and you work it out in your budget. I know it’s not ethical or moral, but I’d rather have my passport with me than leave it overnight when anyone can copy it and use it to steal identity.

I have to say it was the worst country i have ever been to. You can understand in these poorer countries people trying to scam you, but it was even full on at the hotel (5 Star), had staff knocking on the room door continuously, wanting to do something in the room, then pretend they are doing something for me and then hanging around for a tip. Order food the same thing, 3 to 4 would turn up after the meal wanting a tip, and trying to get more money for the food. Booking day trips the same thing, changing the prices all the time and if you asked for directions to somewhere same again, and even when i asked for names for some restaurants, Oh no if you eat outside the hotel you will get food poisoning. 😱Oh my Gosh, didn't you realize what just happened to you in Pemba? You have just been considered an INAD (the term INAD is used for passengers who are not accepted by the competent authorities of a country for entry into that country. This may also be the case when a connecting flight n is not allowed by the airline or government officials. for various reasons. Because you probably didn't have a transit visa, or simply no visa ... INAD stands for: Inadmissible Passenger. And that's why they changed your seat and placed you in the back of the cabin, gave your passport to the crew and possibly accompanied by a plainclothes police officer. It's a procedure... if you didn't get a fine you're lucky but normally you get it and so does the company.

I think you did your first time experience as a INAD ... it's quite a shame, they didn't explain you, in this corrupted country... it could be worse... you could be detained in jail until the next flight. Single advice i can give you or others before you get your ticket and leaving make sure with the ambassy you don't need a valid visa mandatory before leaving... Some time you can have your visa at arrival sometime you must have one before your departure and can't get one at your final destination and have a fine if the company let you flying through without visa mandatory ... same thing if you have a stopover, you are in transit in a country... check every stop the need for a visa or not.

@@princedanny1473 where did I say 🇲🇿 is the poorest country in the world?🤔 I wrote, it is - one- of the poorest! I believe it is the 4th poorest, , but it should NOT be. I can only hope it gets its act together, for it deserves SO much more. It is a beautiful country, it's people are lovely, despite the corruption and blatant bribery os some. I just pray Mozambique can get from under all that bad luck and finally thrive and shine.

I'm South African, the passport scam is VERY common, albeit worse when doing a land crossing. Always have a few dollars on you when crossing.

If you travel through Africa you must ALWAYS keep a few "presents" with you. The smallest token goes a long way.

Hey Josh, I really love your videos but one thing I think you could improve is to show the route of your flight on a map in every video like in this one. It would only occupy a couple seconds of the video but show a very important detail in my opinion. Keep it up :)

When decent people meet foreigners at the airport they should represent the hospitality of the country and not selfishly ask for bribes.

As an African, I can confirm that you had a terrible experience. Are people so corrupt to start asking for bribes?

YES! And even if they do not ask you directly, they are certainly expecting it.

I flew on Aloha Airlines when I was a teenager back in 2005 when my family took a trip to Hawaii. I'll never forget flying on their 737-200s for the inter-island flights. Even back then, flying on a 737-200 in the US was quite rare and special. There were also Northwest and JAL DC-10s and ATA L-1011s at Honolulu back then. It was a different era for sure.

I think you will not forget this africian trip .Many experiences, drama ,happy flights and also many fearful flights... I really enjoyed watching every video you posted trying different African airlines such as Air peace ,Ibom air,Air cote d ivore,Air senegal sorry if i missed anything . So happy to virtually travel with you on the above mentioned African airlines .. I also recommend to fly Air Mauritius because recently i had experienced traveling with them in Business class on their A 350 ...Expecting more interesting videos from you .By the way i am from India andyou are my best airline reviewer.. If there is a Oscar award for best airline reviewer you will be the winner

They need to brush up on their begging/bribe skills. Send them to any international Airport in Nigeria . They keep asking for chocolate . One day someone will just give them a snicker bar to shut them up.

If you hate Loo Reviews, why do you continue to do them? I personally always skip them as the toilet is rather unimportant to me. If i need to use it, i do, regardless of how it looks.
