The plane was not struck by lightning. The airframe was overstressed by penetrating a thunderstorm. Read the NTSB report.

My father was the first person "on scene" at the crash site. Him, my mother and 2 older brothers watched it fall from them sky. My father being a airline captain himself knew exactly what happened before it hit the ground

I was fortunate to have been taught forensics from Dr. Charles Mott of the Texas Public Safety Waco criminal lab. Dr. Mott had a photo album with the accident pics in it. It was a stunning picture of what happens to the human body in a commercial airplane crash. The smell of the dead was so bad they tore the gym down. It was an absolutely terrible site.

They didn't tear the gym down. I live right down the street from it. I was six years old when that plane crashed. I graduated from Dawson high school

The NTSB report does not state that the plane was hit by lightning! It disintegrated due to forces on the airplane that it was not constructed for during a 180 degree turn.
