If you're looking for a good desoldering pump on a budget I'd recommend the Hakko FR-301. It's a slimmed down version of the classic Hakko 808 at around 200 bucks the price can't be beat for a name brand tool. I clean the tip on mine when it clogs with a mini drill bit set I got off e-bay works way better than the included tool.

I have a Hakko 472D that I bought for a fortune ages ago, I seldom use it but it is always dependable. It is not to make money, it is a hobby for me, just to keep my skills from a previous life sharp. But hearing my STA-2150 again after sitting in storage bathing in cap juice for decades was just like Nirvana.

Akai made some great gear over the years, sadly now it is only a brand name. I well remember the STK range of output stages, the more popular ones we kept in stock knowing that another amp would soon be on the bench that had been overdriven. The amps from this era to my ears sound far better than todays overbright samples that sound good in the showroom, but after a few hours at home you regret buying them.

Regarding solder wick versus Hakko FR-301.. The solder wick is a continuing expense, whereas the Hakko not-so-much. And good solder wick is actually quite expensive IMO. Even with the cheap Chinese stuff that you absolutely must add flux to, it's still rather expensive - and one tends to need to use a lot at a time. Granted, there is no way of going without solder wick for certain things regardless, but for bulk solder sucking I would think the Hakko would be cheaper in the medium to long run - not mention much quicker. Plus, with the Hakko, you could do some therapeutic component removal of junk boards for when you might get bored - or make it super easy to scavenge items. 👍
@12voltvids

A 15.00 roll of solder wick lasts me about 2 years and it is good quality made in Japan wick. Many people don't know how to use wick and waste it. I rarely use more than an inch. I won't buy expensive equipment unless I know I can make it back. For example if my camera breaks I buy a new one because i know i use it on every video and the payback will be fast. A 500 solder sucker that gets used perhaps once a month will have a very long pay back. If I was doing this for a living I might consider but I'm not.

@peterlarkin762
Жыл бұрын
It's more than halfway to a dual mono power supply. There are (maybe) two secondary windings for each amp rectifier. It does isolate the supplies and filters them seperatley. Having another transformer is not a huge advantage IF the single one has a high enough power output.
@Stelios.Posantzis
Жыл бұрын
@@peterlarkin762 Ok, I'm more impressed now. I know this argument that a single big mains transformer is often cheaper and better than two separate ones. (I guess the comparison applies only when the two different designs do not differ greatly in cost.) I guess this cost-vs.-performance benefit has to do with the basic core geometry but I have never worked out the design math to convince myself.

17:45 There are two types of desoldering pump tools: the one with integrated pump in the pistol and the one with a pump in the control unit. Both are cheaply made and I think one should be really careful selecting one. I'd go for the separate pump version. It is still a lot of money, given they cost between 99$ and 160$. There are many versions out there but probably most are the same thing.

I had one years ago at the shop. The dam tips would constantly clog making it take even longer to remove parts than using braid. @@12voltvids There's a few youtube videos on those, all dating at least 3 years back. I have not found any recent ones - this maybe counts for something. They all agree with your evidence. It is also stated in one of them that, for the particular one reviewed. the metal tube was extending further back from the heater element itself by about 1 cm. This meant that if you turned the gun on and used it to de-solder, the molten solder would solidify when it would reach the back part of the tube as that part was still cold. Removing that solder was always a major chore. The remedy suggested was heating the gun up for 10-15' before use.

Dual power supply? You gotta be kidding me... I always thought this series had IC power output modules but now I think they are in fact monolithic dual power transistors - which makes them repairable in theory. I am trying to like this series, especially because it makes a matching set with the AT-V04 tuner and perhaps a couple of good tape decks from that series. Now of course, tape decks are only used for nostalgic reasons but they still make for a cool looking set. What is annoying about AKAI is that very few of their series were complete, for most series you had to borrow a piece from another later or earlier series which would not be a 100% stylistic or technological match. E.g. there was never a tuner to match the AM-2800,, a black version of the GXC-760 tape deck. Having said that, this is probably the coolest looking series coming out of AKAI and it marked the start of their very quick demise with the exception of the brilliant but expensive '88-'96 series (which again was never complete, at least not in Europe).

@@12voltvids This would be a reply to my other comment. Yes, I agree. My point was that I do not find it impressive. Of course having just one supply would be even less impressive. I'm not sure if the previous series in the late '70s, which were much sturdier units, also had this type of dual supply. Maybe they didn't and seeing that AKAI was skimping out on the build quality, parts etc. maybe they thought it would be a good idea to promote technological upgrades as it was one way to make their product stand out somewhat.

@@12voltvids They were versed towards the mid-market section and, during the decline years, to the low end - I agree with that. However, they did have many excellent products: the xx-73/75 and xx-93/95 series are highly sought after even now. Earlier in the 80's had many great models, especially tape decks - let's not forget their reel-to-reel decks after all. Their record decks were not bad for the money either and their top models still retain their value today. That's more than 40 years after they were made, quite a feat if you ask me. Last but not least, they were very successful with video recorders. Back in the 80s, when they hit financial trouble, competitions was very high and the market was much smaller than today. They did more than alright in my book and it's a shame they did not get to develop their ranges to their maximum potential. Try anything from their xx-93 series and you won't regret it - assuming it's in good condition.
