I can confirm that the Tascam model 12 can definitely send USB audio 'post' channel strip, you just need to configure it in the menu. In the Tascam, go to 'MENU > MIXER > MTR/USB SEND POINT ' and there you can set each channel to send pre or post channel strip. I just tested it with a mic in mixer track 5 with it set to 'POST EQ' and recorded into the MPC sampler while actively changing the EQ and compression knobs on the channel strip - it's definitely sending the audio to the MPC 'post', not pre.

So I have the M12 and the updated Force and I've been able to make use of the Compressor, EQ and both the Force and in built effects on a single channel coming into the board. The trick to to set the input and output on an audio track (from external synth) to be the exact same. Input 1/Output 1. Audio comes into M12 passed to Force via USB, Force does processing passes audio back out over USB to same channel, M12 picks up audio and runs it though the Gain stage, compressor, EQ and FX and out to the Main/Sub mixes. You could even get fancy and make use of sub-mixes in the Force for further audio routing. Voila best of both worlds!

You can use the inputs of the Model12 from the Force even when switched to output mode (switch set to PC - not MTK as shown in the video). That means you could loop your submix output to an input for post eq recording of any output(s) sent to sub. Also useful, you can record input 11/12 from the Force to get the main mixed output (another way of recording post fader and eq). Careful not to enable monitoring when doing so or you could get some nasty feedback loop.
@PinkBuddhaAcademy

Biggest downfalls for me using this combo: losing a stereo pair as your “master output” (which also happens when using as an interface with a DAW). The actual Master on the mixer just seems to control the output the external outs, and cannot have anything assigned. Makes sense but is also weird. Also, when running a mic into the M12 for processing on the Force, it seems I have to one channel as an input, another as an output. Suddenly I’m losing channels all over, and have to run hardware synths direct into M12 with no Force processing / compressing etc. any work arounds (besides sampling) would be amazing to hear about. Currently thinking about switching to a larger regular interface instead of this hybrid style.

You can select...via a button whether to send tracks to the master or sub mix (or not...maybe just an aux?). This mixer is better for a "hybrid" approach of you don't need all the audio routed into the force and back out.

Based on my own and other people's experiences, there seem to be a grand total of two (2) sensible multi-channel USB audio interfaces that actually work all the way with the Akai MPC and Force: the Tascam Model 12 presented here, and Behringer UMC 1820. Those two are the only ones about which I've not found anything but "everything works 100%" reports. The marketing claim that any class compliant interface works, is grossly exaggerated. Until Akai add lots of new driver fixes into the Linux kernel they use, the "class compiant" claim is largely false and misleading. Do not trust claims you see on the internet, you need to test the interface together with your Akai. The only way to know if a particular combination works for your use, you have to test that exact combination yourself.

I’ve got a Model 12 and just ordered a Force. However, my workflow will be different. I’m going to take the sub out from the Model 12 and go into the analog inputs of the Force then from the Force outputs into the analog inputs of tracks 7/8 stereo pair on the Model 12. Now I’ll be able to capture any input from the Model 12 into the Force by assigning that channel to the sub output. So I will record my Force output to Model 12 tracks 7/8 and have the other 8 inputs/tracks of the Model 12 to record guitar, vocals, etc. Basically, I’ll mostly be using the Force for beats and synths, maybe some background vocals. The way I look at it, I will have 16 tracks total to work with, 6 of them mono and 10 stereo.

I spent a great deal of time in Jedi training learning how to use the force by itself, having never worked with any DAW before (that was, flying a spaceship, kind of fun!) but not enough time learning the routing, technician stuff. Everything works indepently ...midi keyboard 37 works with DP12d ✅ kb37 + Force ✅ kb37 + laptop ✅ Monitors work great with everything ✅ Interface works with laptop ✅ now I'm just trying to make it all sync/ work together and then build from there... If you can share any of your insight or point to what I need to make it all work as a family.. I was hoping it would all work around the Force but that means I need to route everything to the force ✅ ... everything has USB and midi ports ..once and if everything is connected (USB ports and the midi in ports) I'll exhausted all it's inputs... So what I need to do is hook everything up to audio interface with plenty of ports and then hook that up to the Force? but then the "Force" loses all it hardware function ability... that's a really scary thought, especially since the force was the first component I got lol

My Behringer mixer works fine but unfortunately is only 2 in 2 out so no real benefit there I was thinking of the Tascam 12 as that is what the Akai videos were using but Im not sure if I really need it either. It's the other way around - you can use the audio interface that you have connected to your computer with Force. For example, I use my AudioFuse Studio with the Force to route all synths and the turntable, make music on the Force and export it as an Ableton Live session. Then I open it in Live, connect AudioFuse to my laptop and take it from there - while maintaining all of the same inputs and routing between Force and Abletone Live (yes, I can't use both at the same time, not my use case though). Hope that it makes sense!

well - it will function as a USB interface with your computer... if you hook it up directly to that. But yeah, it doesn't just enable the force to directly spit out all those tracks directly into your computer. But @lukasz here has a good point. If you use Ableton, you can just record internally and then export as a session. And you'll get everything broken out into tracks.

@@PinkBuddhaAcademy My MacBook doesn’t recognize it when I connect it via USB. Does yours ? It does not show up as an option in Preferences >Sound input which is a bit dissapointing. My Helix and RC 505 both work that way. It would be great if I could record separate tracks into Logic. Or even if I could get stereo outs into my computer. Right now for my livestreams I’m going Force>Digi 003/Protools(iMac)>RC 505 usb out>MacBook/Logic>OBS. It would be cool if I could go directly from Force through USB to MacBook.

I checked with TASCAM. They say, "You can indeed record the EQ and compressor to the DAW when recording in USB audio interface mode. This can be changed as described on page 54 on each individual channel's MTR/USB Send Point. This can be done by pressing the menu button and going to mixer and selecting MTR/USB send point and the individual channel can be selected to PRE COMP, POST COMP, POST EQ."

on the l series and the bigger tascams the reason is simple, they are mixers first, recorders second, the FX are there for the mixer to use in a live situation, the idea being you then have the clean uneffected audio recorded to import to your computer and finesse there where its generally easier/better.

What if you want your master DAW on a computer and you want the Force to be a slave to the DAW'S sequencer so you can manipulate it's MIDI clips with Ableton MIDI effects? And then you want the Tascam to control the DAW and also receive external guitars or whatever? Does that even make sense? OMG this is so confusing to me. I never know what is inputing and what is outputing in your videos. Is this an advanced teaching you're giving here or am I just having trouble paying attention? -Thanks🙏
@PinkBuddhaAcademy

haha - sorry for it to be confusing. I think if you want your main DAW to be on a computer (like Ableton?), then I wouldn't really recommend using the Force. There are better MIDI controllers out there for controlling Ableton. What I'm demonstrating here is using the Tascam as an audio interface for the Force. Well - like an audio interface that also is a mixer (with sliders/EQ and all of that). The only reason you'd use something like with the Force is to get more inputs, and have some physical hardware to control EQ, volume, etc. Does that help?

The EQ issue is a non-starter for me, too much wasted real estate and a wasted opportunity for Akai overall. Akai just seems to look so good initially then fails to stick the landing almost every time. "A day late and a dollar short.", as my Nana used to say.

Heh that was quick! There's no current info on audio/midi latency with the Force & external gear but it would take laboratory conditions to test, and pretty pointless for lots of folk... And at least the (digital) Model 12 has all those knobs/sliders for multi-function MIDI allocation (which you could program with internal Force FX MIDI values, removing one of yr negatives here?), unlike the Models 16/24 which are analogue only. I'd like to see if you can switch from normal track control to MIDI controller on the Model 16 without glitches or fader values jumping. More reason for dedicated controllers. Anyways thanks for keeping the Force flag flying and for this video :)

Just looked up the MIDI info on the Model 12 and it has a MIDI implementation chart. I guess the MIDI monitor on the Force would come in handy here if you did want to control Force MIDI from the Model 12? Also, it seems you *can* allocate comp/EQ post-fader in the settings, but not FX (unless you send the channel out then back in to a spare track, apparently). I've been interested in the Force + Model 12 for a while but prices have rocketed and bank account plummeted :( Hope this helps in the ongoing quest :)
