Maverick 88s do have dual action bars. They also have dual shell extractors. The m500 was based on the old high standard model 1200. Mossberg merely changed the safety location on the 500. The 500 and The 88 are The exact same gun. The mav88 is basically a modern high standard model 1200. The Safety and pump release are in the exact same location on the mav88 as the model 1200. I would love to have one of these akkar churchills to throw in the ole ranger. I'd hate to lose my mossy.

I have a similar version of this (the Churchill 612 tactical). With regards to the recoil, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks it's a little excessive! I've been to the range twice, and both times I got a pretty nasty bruise. I just ordered a limbsaver airtech slip on recoil pad for the stock which I heard helps. I've shot 8 shot, 4 shot and low recoil slugs. Honestly the low recoil slugs were the most gentle on the shoulder. I'm going to look for some low recoil target loads just for practice.

Shooting any shotgun from a bench position can be painfull, standing is much easier on your shoulder. I used to own a Maverick 88 and that shotgun went on a ton of adventures with me, shot skeet, got rained on and slightly neglected and it always functioned. Oh, the 590A1 receivers are alluminium just much thicker than the 88 or 500 and the bolt locks in the barrel extension like the Hatsan/Churchill unlike the steel 870 that locks in the receiver. The two worst things about 12-14" barrel shotguns is that they notoriously shoot low and the muzzle blast is insane. That steel target was at 76 meters? Most of those shots were dead deer IMHO, not bad at all.

I had an old 88 as well! Bought it for 80$, it was rusted and looked like hell. Cleaned it up, cut it to 20" and put a fiber-optic bead on it. I wish I never got rid of it... I think I traded it for a 535 tactical turkey... also no longer have that. Mainly run a 500 w/28" barrel now. I wanna take that out to the same spot, I bet I knock that plate around every shot. And yes, 76 yards. After reviewing the footage the shots are very close, but I would never feel good about hunting with the churchill at that range. If I'm not dropping them right on top of eachother in the bullseye, no bueno. Thanks again for the awesome comment!🍻

I have this exact gun, bought it to carry on myy backpack for bear defense while soil sampling in northwest bc. Have you had any issues with it dropping shells from the loading port? Mine ran beautifully on practice. But once I started carrying it in the bush and it getting exposed to dirt and moisture, it's had problems cycling. I haven't had to use it yet, but when unloading it at the end of the day it's been tossing shells.

I’m also in Canada and thinking about one of these for cougar defense when I’m way out in the middle of no where. Thing is though, when I dig up the course material for the firearm safety course, it doesn’t really spell out what the rules are for carrying for wilderness defense. Are we really supposed to carry it unloaded while in the middle of nowhere? Or can you keep the tube loaded and the chamber empty I.e. “cruiser ready”? I’d love it if you could shed some light on this. I do go to the middle of no where, but it would be my shit+y luck to run into a CO.

RCMP does say that you're allowed to carry a non-restricted firearm for self-defense in wilderness but I'd always have my hunting tags handy whenever I hike with my firearm even if I do not intend to hunt just in case of any encounters with a conservation officer.

Hi! Great review!...I specifically wondered if it had the dual action bars? So thanks for pointing that out! However...as another commenter has mentioned too..the Mossberg Maverick 88 DOES! Have dual action bars too! AND! The 500 Mossberg also does too! :o) Perhaps you could edit the video?..and not misinform folks about these important features? Again! though! I like your video! excellent smooth & clear, and in focus camera work..and nice clear audio as well! You covered this Firearm excellently! ( Other than the dual action bar boo -bo on the Mossbergs ) Thanks! 👍🙂

I know the 500 and some 88s have dual action bars, early 88s did not (I owned an early one.) I do apologize for not articulating things that specifically in the video, however if you and some of the other commenters here did the research first you would realize there is validity in both statements, neither being entirely correct though either. (Yes, the neither/either was intentional.)

I'm not sure if this has been brought up, if I'm wrong please excuse my ignorance, but I'm not positive the pump action is supposed to rack itself like that when you fire.. @lumberjackoutdoors933

The action unlocks when you pull the trigger on any pump shotgun. With the gun being so light, and a heavy recoil the bolt moves because of inertia created by the recoil impulse as an opposite reaction to frame of the shotgun stopping on my shoulder. It isn't moving because of gas pressure, just physics.

The problem you're having with that gun is likely due to a weak slide release spring (aka carrier release spring). Replacing it with a considerably stronger spring will likely fix the problem of the shells opening the action after firing. Call the manufacturer and see if they will fix it for free.
