Di Meola has his own, clear opinion on the guitarist called Steve Vai and, maybe, he knows something that we don't know about being a great guitar player. Anyway, that said, you don't like Vai's mood and it's very ok, it's your taste and it's your full right to dislike it BUT (I hope not to hurt you) there's no bossa nova here goin' on at all, not even a vague resemblance of it.... The rhythm that drums and bass are playing is, instead, some sort of fast samba or, better said, just "something-vaguely-like-a-(fast)samba". And if we just suppose that this is a bossa nova (and it's not), I don't anyway listen to any bossa nova guitarist here at all, not Vai nor Di Meola. Maybe one could just say that he/she don't like Vai's mood, it's easier and faster, and there's no risk to say something and totally miss the point. But you're right, he is just doing what he always do: playing like hell. Best regards.
@Realtoneable
6 жыл бұрын
Alessandro Rossini i get your point. For me here steve does not groove he is just playing as hell.. I beleive in this: playing fast like steve or other very famous guitarists is something that you can achieve in 3 to 5 years, a small research on youtube will prove that. But learning how to groove is something that you cant find in books and technique methods. So listen to great jazz guitarists like pat metheny, john scofield, wes montgomery etc and you will understand much better what i mean. Take care byee!

They're just both doing their stuff. Vai is much to experienced and relaxed to try to prove himself to anyone, and so is di Meola. If Vai is playing weird and out of the "groove" (such as there is - that's no bossa), it's because he doesn't feel like it, certainly not because he can't do it or doesn't have the feeling.

Both players are great but I've begun to realize that playing music that folk can dance is so important. Folk work 9 2 5, and they wanna dance with their wives etc when the get off work, instrumental music is cool and has it place but most folk don't care to much about your chops, they wanna interact with their spouses, this is something a lot of great players and musicians seem to forget.

Oh. My. Franking. Zappa. Such a trip that they were both big Zappa fans, and Steve was a big fan of Al, then Steve went on to work with Frank, and then Al became a fan of Steve, and then Frank asked Al to play on a track, and then Al invited Steve to come play on the song Frank had written for Al to play on. And they way Al directed the band to lay so that the two of them could just play off each other was beautiful. I also loved how they really complemented each other, sometimes with Steve going into full on rhythm mode. Heavy convergence! They have both been heavy influences on me since I was a teenager.
