On acoustic, alternate-picking is the most consistent way to sound ultra-fast while keeping the volume of each note even and clear. On distorted electric, the signal is so hot, the notes ring out loudly no matter what technique is used. The same on the clean channel, but to a MUCH lesser degree. Also, a lot of Rock players, especially younger intermediate ones, use tapping as a "shortcut" to sounding fast. Under those circumstances, I can see what Al means by "shortcut" and "cheating."

@tracebrem You can play staccato with just hammer-ons and legato by picking every note.;) It´s very hard to play legato if you alternatepick every note but possible,

@tracebrem You can play play staccato by using only hammer-ons for sure and I think I have heard Holdsworth and maybe Mclaughlin playing legato and alternatepicking every note so that´s possible too extremely hard though.

Sweeping and Legato are not going to be good in the long run for more intricate kinds of music? Come on Al! I heard when U.K supported him, he was blown away by Allan Holdsworth, who is a fucking legato master! And he must know who Frank Gambale is, the guy who turned sweeping into an art form.

I guess Al gotta sell what he does best - extremely fast, machine gun-like, alternate picking - so it's fitting for him to 'diss' legato, sweeping, hammer-ons and pull-offs. Although he's got some nice compositions (like 'Mediterranean Sundance'), his soloing vocabulary, articulation, never been my cup of tea, although I recognize it's all being played w/ amazing chops/speed, 'impressive' technique - that's what he's about - I even read on an old Guitar Player interview from the 1980s where he admitted his original goal was to be the fastest guitar player on the planet. But, yeah, if you wanna sound like him on acoustic guitar, you gotta go for straight up alternate picking.

right hand technique is crucial! but c'mon.. haha "hammer-ons is a shortcut"? :) hammer-on is just a technique to get a legato effect.. just as picking is to get a staccato effect.
