Rich, thanks for the trip down memory lane. Appreciate your ability to let Al tell the story and listen like the rest of us with tears welling up in our eyes. Every bit of that story contributes to the unbelievable feeling delivered by the outcome.

The game was in the afternoon. My dad said, “You’re not watching the ‘Dukes of Hazzard’ tonight. We’re watching hockey.”

What an iconic moment. I remember it clearly today as I did as a 10 year old.

I was 12 years old and I remember having to watch this in my parent's room because they didn't want to watch hockey. It was honestly the first hockey game I remember seeing. Nothing since or ever will beat that feeling I had seeing them beat the Soviets just to get into the gold medal round!.

So glad I ran across this. I pretty sure I heard about the win because I remember eagerly awaiting the broadcast when I would not have watched hockey otherwise. And what a profound comment from Tretiak. It's obviously not as fun when you dominate your sport and win literally every game.

I remember watching this game not knowing how it ended and being unaware at the time it was over already.

for context to young people who know nothing...imagine taking the nhl all star team and have them practice and play together for 10 years then put them against a college team that played together for what 6 months...and the all stars get out skated and beaten by the boys.

@McCarthy Park & P.A.P.A. - I have a sister that was there in Lake Placid. She went to Courtland College at the time & her college friend lived in Lake Placid. 43 years later the Russian people are being let down by their own propaganda and military. This was just a hockey game. We all know - ( in the West ) - Ukraine is not a game and yet the Russian propaganda does treat it exactly the same. Their "Mother Land" / Mother Russia / The Russian Way has not and will not stop. And now?, we can't even play hockey with them anymore. or can we? ....... Ukraine police watching over an Olympic village in Donbas Ukraine would be very cool. Crimea track & field house. Turn Crimea into an Olympic village / S.O. too

The Russian coach didn't give the U.S. team any respect. He thought they could win with any goalie and he'd prove it by pulling Tretiak. If he'd left Tretiak in the Russians would have won the game.

Hard to believe driving by that rink that such a historic event took place in that tiny village.🏒🏒🏒🏒🏒
