He did absolutely the right thing. The peanut gallery was uncivilized and knows nothing about humanity or music.

Absolutely. If you are doing something the 99.99% can't do, then you don't have to go through the opinion of the uneducated.

@gretchenamspinnrade I really don't think he was criticized for that reason. He just didn't sing as La Scala audience expected.

I would not critic Alagna, or say nothing about his actitude...or say that he did not sang well...but will say that in my humble tenor career, will preffer better to die on stage that to leave like this!!!!!...Muerte antes que deshonor!!!!!!. But still admire very much Alagna...he is one of the best!!!!!!

Lo que creo es que los que asisten a ese teatro y abuchean a un cantante porque no está en su mejor momento son unos cretinos que no saben de verdad lo que es pararse en un escenario porque nunca lo han hecho.

La Scala is harsh! Pavarotti himself was "booed" there more then once. Unless you are pefect, they boo. It's nothing personal they're just letting you know they don't enjoy the performance. It's not like here in America where you respect a performer no matter what. They look at it as more of a service combined with entertainment, then a privilaged art form.

@puppetoz I don't think it was a "typical rude Italian audience". Probably a typical rude Milano audience. From what I have heard over the years the inhabitants of the cheap seats have a very bad attitude.

If his voice was not suited for this role, is that his fault, or La Scala for casting him in the first place? Equal fault?

Yeah, probably so. La Scala probably was more interested in a tenor with a big name than a big voice.

don´t even say that, Antonello does it quite better than him.

He got booed because he his voice is not suited for this role. He has an unpleasant blat to his voice that I find very annoying. I heard Corelli sing Radames in Rome in 1969 and believe me, Alagna is no Corelli. Not even close. I saw Alagna today in La Rondine at the MET and he was dreadful in that role as well. His only virtue is that he is married to one of the finest sopranos of our age. He pales in comparison.

*Alagna has ruined his once beautiful lyric tenor voice by taking on spinto roles he has no business singing. Countless operatic singers have fallen into this trap with the same results. I'm talking to you, Netrebko! Another beautiful voice ruined. Alagana's vibrato here sounds like an old fashioned car trying to start. We should boo performers when they suck. They'll never learn other wise and we pay a LOT to hear them.*
